The French and Francophone Studies B.A. prepares students for dynamic international careers through a well-rounded and diverse program of study. French and Francophone Studies majors at UCF develop both their understanding of French linguistics and their ability to use French to communicate effectively in a variety of social and professional settings. At the conclusion of their undergraduate careers, students will have developed a professional portfolio for inclusion with graduate school, internship, or job applications.

The French and Francophone Studies B.A. requires students to take and pass a total of 36 credit hours or 12 classes of upper-division French with a grade of “C” or better.
- Upper-division classes are those classes with course numbers of 3000+
- Students who have no prior knowledge of French can graduate with a French and Francophone Studies B.A. degree in four years.
- Students who have previous knowledge of the language from High School, AP, or IB classes may be able to bypass the Elementary and Intermediate-level courses and enroll in Advanced classes, depending on their years of experience and test results.
- Experienced French students, including native or heritage speakers of French, should contact the Undergraduate Program Coordinator, to discuss their language learning experience, to determine which course they should enroll in, and to determine their individual program of study.
Core Courses
French and Francophone Studies majors must take and pass 21 credit hours or 7 core classes of upper-division French with a grade of “C” or better. The courses designated as core classes are:
- FRE 3300 – Advanced French Grammar
- FRE 3420 or FRE 4422 or FRE3400 – French Composition or Advanced French Composition or French Conversation and Composition
- FRE 3760 or FRE 4421 – Advanced French Oral Communication or Advanced French Conversation
- FRE 3780 – French Phonetics and Diction
- FRE 4700 – French Linguistics
- FRW 3100 or FRW 3001 – Survey of French Literature 1: Medieval-17th Century or Foundations in French Literature
- FRW 3101 or FRW 3770 – Survey of French Literature 2: 18th – 21st Century or Francophone Literature
Notes
- FRE 3420 is not a prerequisite for FRE 4422
- FRE 3760 is not a prerequisite for FRE 4421
- FRE 3400, FRE 3300, and FRE 4701 are offered in every Fall semesters
- FRE 4421 and FRE 3780 and FRW 3001 are offered every Spring semester
- During their last semester, French and Francophone Studies majors will take FRE 4950c, a 0-credit capstone course during which they will prepare a Digital Storytelling project, a professional Portfolio, and prepare to take and pass the Exit Exam.
Elective Courses
In addition to the core courses, French and Francophone Studies majors must take and pass 15 credit hours or 5 elective classes of upper-division French with a grade of “C” or better. Elective course offerings will vary from semester to semester.
