The French and Francophone Studies B.A. prepares students for dynamic international careers through a well-rounded and diverse program of study. French and Francophone Studies majors at UCF develop both their understanding of French linguistics and their ability to use French to communicate effectively in a variety of social and professional settings. At the conclusion of their undergraduate careers, students will have developed a professional portfolio for inclusion with graduate school, internship, or job applications.

The French and Francophone Studies B.A. requires students to take and pass a total of 36 credit hours or 12 classes of upper-division French with a grade of “C” or better.

  • Upper-division classes are those classes with course numbers of 3000+
  • Students who have no prior knowledge of French can graduate with a French and Francophone Studies B.A. degree in four years.
  • Students who have previous knowledge of the language from High School, AP, or IB classes may be able to bypass the Elementary and Intermediate-level courses and enroll in Advanced classes, depending on their years of experience and test results.
  • Experienced French students, including native or heritage speakers of French, should contact the Undergraduate Program Coordinator, to discuss their language learning experience, to determine which course they should enroll in, and to determine their individual program of study.

Core Courses

French and Francophone Studies majors must take and pass 21 credit hours or 7 core classes of upper-division French with a grade of “C” or better. The courses designated as core classes are:

  1. FRE 3300 – Advanced French Grammar
  2. FRE3400 – French Conversation and Composition
  3. FRE 4421 – Advanced French Conversation
  4. FRE 3780 – French Phonetics and Diction
  5. FRE 4700 – French Linguistics
  6. FRW 3001 – Foundations in French and Francophone Literature
  7. Two other FRW – Literature courses of your choice

Notes

  • During their last semester, French and Francophone Studies majors will take FRE 4950c, a 0-credit capstone course during which they will prepare a professional Portfolio, and prepare to take and pass the Exit Exam.
  • Students coming from a State College with French II should enroll in FRE 2200 (Intermediate I)
  • Students coming with AP or IB credits should talk with a French Advisor

Elective Courses

In addition to the core courses, French and Francophone Studies majors must take and pass 15 credit hours or 5 elective classes of upper-division French with a grade of “C” or better. Elective course offerings will vary from semester to semester.
