Biography
Dr. Barnickel began her career at UCF in an administrative position in the Office of the President in 1994. During her tenure in that office, she was a professional writer for the president, generating and answering correspondence, writing speeches, researching proposals and other documents, collaborating with other departments on accreditation documents, grants, studies, and other written materials. She responded to most complaints that reached the president's office, and she also maintained the president's office website.
Since earning her Ph.D. in Texts and Technology from UCF in December 2010, Dr. Barnickel has joined the faculty of the Department of Writing and Rhetoric, where she is a lecturer. She is also an affiliate member of the faculty in Women's and Gender Studies.
Dr. Barnickel teaches online and in face to face environments. She has taught Professional Editing, Careers in Professional Writing, Composition, and Women's Studies courses. Dr. Barnickel is expanding her expertise in all areas of writing instruction, but one particular new area of study for her is the intersection of art-making and writing.

Artmaking and writing, gender, feminism, writing and rhetoric, cultural studies, Caribbean literature, women's studies, theatre and musical theatre
Recent Research Activities
Dr. Barnickel's research project inspired by cowboy artist Charles Russell revolves around resurrecting the art of the illustrated postcard and illustrated letter and offers many possibilities for inspiration in writing and art classrooms. Her workshop proposal, "Remixing the Self-Illustrated Post Card: Technological Mediations of Art and Writing," was accepted for the annual convention of the National Art Education Association in San Diego, CA, March 29-April 1, 2014. She received her department's excellence in community engagement award in 2015 for this project.
