Biography
Nancy Stanlick is Professor of Philosophy and Chair of the Department of Philosophy.
Prior to appointment as Chair in 2023, she was Associate Dean
and Director of Research in the College of Arts and Humanities at the
University of Central Florida, having served CAH for 13 years (from 2010) as assistant to the dean, assistant dean, and associate dean. She was promoted to Professor in 2015. Prior to work in the CAH Dean's Office (in reverse chronological order), she was associate professor (2007-2015), assistant professor (2001-2007), visiting instructor (1999-2001), and adjunct at UCF from 1987-1995. In other old news and not in chronological order, she was Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy at UNF in Jacksonville from 1995-1999 and returned to UCF in 1999; adjunct instructor at USF in Tampa from 1983-1990 and from 1999-2001; graduate assistant at USF from 1981-1983 and graduate associate from 1990-1995. That's a lot to remember....
She is author of 2 books in American philosophy (Pearson Prentice Hall and Routledge),
editor of an anthology in American philosophy (Pearson Prentice Hall), co-author of a book in ethics (Hackett),
editor of a modernized edition of Thomas Hobbes’s Leviathan (Hackett), and co-author with
Drs. Rudy McDaniel and Jonathan Beever of Understanding Digital Ethics (2018) with Routledge. Dr.
Stanlick’s interests are primarily in the history of American and Early Modern
philosophy, the history of ideas, and theoretical and applied ethics. She
earned a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of South Florida in 1995, an MA in 1983, and BA in 1981; and AA in 1979 from Polk Community (now State) College. In addition, she is founding co-editor (with Shelley Park) and senior editor (with Michael Strawser) of the Florida Philosophical Review: The Journal of the Florida Philosophical Association (housed at UCF).
Dr. Stanlick has been president of the Florida Philosophical Association, Treasurer of the Eastern Division of the Society for Women in Philosophy; is area editor in American Philosophy for the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, and is a member of professional associations in philosophy. Her university-level teaching experience began in 1981 as a graduate assistant instructor of record teaching formal logic, introduction to philosophy, and practical logic at the University of South Florida. She has attained positions of various ranks in faculty and administration from graduate assistant, graduate associate, adjunct instructor, visiting assistant professor, visiting instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, professor, assistant to the dean, assistant dean and associate dean, and chair of the Department of Philosophy. She regularly conducted seminars for the UCF Office of Student Conduct and the College of Graduate Studies at the University of Central Florida on academic and research ethics, continues to be active at UCF in research ethics areas, and is the keynote, introductory symposium speaker for the Burnett Honors College every fall for incoming freshman honors students.
Dr. Stanlick’s duties as associate dean from 2010-2023 included program assessment for CAH and for the University Assessment Committee as UAC Chair, faculty
qualifications management and certification (FQMS), property management, faculty
awards, faculty/staff/student affairs (grade appeals; grievances; personnel issues), facilitation of junior
faculty development, faculty evaluations (SPOIs), and SACS-COC accreditation activities, among others.
For the most part, my activities are for work. But I like to play video games when there is time (Battlefield I, 5, and 2042 and race cars); sleep late on weekends; look at landscapes and photographs of massive mountains; collect cars and drive them (and I like to admire cars of various kinds); I desire to walk in snow again someday (it isn't likely to happen here) and to see in person bursts of color on fall trees and smell lilacs on a real lilac bush (again, not likely to happen here - it rarely snows and it wouldn't last if it did, the leaves fall off the trees at the wrong time of year, and we can't grow lilacs here); and I have a propensity to attract stray cats. Lots of stray cats.
Her administrative and personal philosophy is like her attitude toward life in general. There are four main rules: do your best; whatever you’re doing, strive to do it right (and admit and try to fix it if you did it wrong); act and speak with honesty and integrity; and in all you do, treat others and their interests with respect. And, most importantly, live every day like it is the last.
