This course is a survey of contemporary metaphysics, focused on problems of existence, identity, change, and modality. Questions include: Do I exist? If so, am I just my body, or do I have an immaterial soul? Would I survive the destruction of my body if my memories and other important psychological traits were preserved? Can one person split into two people? When and why do smaller objects compose larger wholes? How do material objects persist over time? Is time real or an illusion? What are possibility and necessity? Are there other possible worlds and, if so, what are they? |
