Biography
Yukari Nakamura-Deacon currently serves as the Japanese Section Coordinator and advisor for the Asian Studies Minor at the University of Central Florida (UCF). She holds an M.A. in Japanese Linguistics and Pedagogy from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and an M.A. in Education from Carthage College.
With experience in curriculum development, she has taught Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Japanese language classes. Her academic interests include High Impact Practices, COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning), and Career Readiness.
She is especially passionate about innovative curriculum design. Her newest course, JPN1421: Japanese Language through Anime, Gaming, and Technology, engages students in language learning through popular media such as Japanese comic books and films, including Spirited Away. In her JPN3440: Advanced Japanese for Today’s Careers, students explore innovative ways to bridge their passion for Japanese language and culture with their academic majors and career goals.
Before joining UCF, she spent nine years at the University of Florida—serving as a Senior Lecturer since 2013—and two years as an Instructor at Arizona State University. She currently serves as Vice President of the Association of Florida Teachers of Japanese (AFTJ).
