Biography
Herbert (Tommy) James, AIA, LEED AP, is Director and Associate Professor of Architecture in the School of Visual Arts & Design at the University of Central Florida. He earned a Master of Architecture from the University of Florida, with a minor in Urban Planning and a Certificate of Sustainable Design. His academic work bridges design research, professional practice, teaching, and community engagement, with a particular focus on understanding how human behavior can inform the creation of better places.
James created Pipeline to Better Placemaking, a six-step research initiative that combines behavioral observation, spatial analysis, digital sensing, immersive visualization, and public participation to evaluate and improve the built environment. His recent interdisciplinary research with UCF Computer Science includes AI-based movement observation using computer vision and multi-camera tracking, as well as LiDAR-based spatial sensing and 3D reconstruction to study how people interact with changing environments.
His professional experience spans healthcare, hospitality, themed entertainment, residential, commercial, mixed-use, and urban design. His work has included projects associated with Hyatt, IAAPA, Walt Disney Imagineering, and communities throughout Central Florida. At UCF, James also leads architecture program development, curriculum initiatives, student mentorship, interdisciplinary partnerships, and community-engaged design projects connecting students with professionals, municipalities, and local organizations.
Research Interests
Placemaking, human behavior and the built environment, evidence-based design, public-space evaluation, artificial intelligence and computer vision for spatial analysis, LiDAR and digital sensing, augmented and mixed reality, community-engaged design, participatory design, urban design, architectural visualization, environmental psychology, design technology, and architectural education.
Recent Research Activities
James continues to develop Pipeline to Better Placemaking, a six-step framework for using human behavior, design technology, and community participation to evaluate existing environments and inform future design decisions.
During 2025–2026, the Measuring Place component expanded through two new digital research prototypes developed in collaboration with UCF Computer Science and tested in the UCF Art Gallery. The first uses computer vision, multi-camera tracking, and a web-based platform to observe and analyze human movement within public spaces. The system is intended to replace labor-intensive manual observation with scalable behavioral data that can support architects, planners, and urban designers.
A parallel prototype uses a privacy-conscious LiDAR-based spatial sensing system combining cameras, a custom rotational LiDAR scanner, edge computing, and 3D reconstruction software to capture, analyze, and visualize changing physical environments and human behavior. Together, these projects advance the development of accessible, data-driven tools for understanding relationships between people, space, and place.
The research builds on earlier Pipeline prototypes involving mobile data collection, augmented reality, public surveys, environmental and behavioral measurements, and interdisciplinary collaborations across computer science, psychology, mixed reality, architecture, and professional technology partners.
Professional Activities
James maintains an active connection between architectural education, professional practice, and community service. He has practiced with Studio 407 Architects and previously worked with HHCP, HuntonBrady Architects, WATG, and Walt Disney Imagineering. His professional portfolio includes healthcare, hospitality, themed entertainment, commercial, residential, and mixed-use projects, including work associated with the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress, IAAPA Global Headquarters, Walt Disney World's Toy Story Land, and the TRON attraction at Magic Kingdom.
His professional service includes leadership and participation with AIA Central Florida, the Orlando Foundation for Architecture, Orlando Main Street programs, and NCARB. He also works with UCF and regional partners on initiatives such as the Urban Innovation Lab and community design collaborations.
Awards
Recognized as a 2023 UCF Luminary Awardee, with the honorees featured in the Spring 2024 issue of Pegasus Magazine. Selected funded awards include the UCF Architecture Output Lab Technology Fee Award, $66,000, Principal Investigator (2020); the UCF Seed Funding Program Award, $40,000, supporting development of the Pipeline to Better Placemaking augmented-reality platform with AKULAR (2022); and the UCF Architecture Output Lab Phase 2 Technology Fee Award, $57,614.32, Principal Investigator (2023). These recognitions and awards reflect contributions to interdisciplinary research, emerging design technologies, fabrication resources, and architectural education.
