This intermediate workshop expands the practice of writing the personal. We will read contemporary and historical writings as we map exemplars of the craft to inform our practice. This course emphasizes the possibilities of structures as we write and revise creative nonfiction using a workshop model.

This is an intermediate level poetry workshop that will focus on the nature of poetry, the creative process, and the elements present in poems. We will read and discuss the work of contemporary poets, as well as writings on craft and criticism. We will also identify and actively engage with the literary community, our professional field, and consider the role of the poet.

This advanced workshop will expand the writers’ practice of developing and refining creative original texts through a workshop model. We will read widely across the sub-genres of Creative Nonfiction, including memoir, journalism, criticism, and the essay. We will also explore form in relation to content, such as comics, multimedia, and screenplays as sites of creative nonfiction.

In this entry-level course, students read literary texts to develop an understanding of authorial decisions in contemporary writing in poetry, fiction, and literary nonfiction. Students will increase their knowledge of relevant writing terminology and concepts and gain insight into the emphases and specialties of the UCF creative writing program. Students will also become familiar with professional pathways including publishing and other applications of a degree in English with a specialization in creative writing. By mapping a plan for ongoing writing practice, students will also identify possible avenues to pursue writing careers.
