Biography

Jessica Lynn Campbell has a PhD in Texts and Technology, and a Master’s in English – Technical Communication, both of which she earned from the University of Central Florida (UCF). Her expertise and research interests intersect the technical and professional communication (TPC) and human-computer interaction (HCI) disciplines, specifically in the healthcare space. She has strong, extensive disciplinary and experiential knowledge of user experience (UX) research and design. She has a range of industry experience as a UX researcher and designer, in addition to TPC practitioner roles, such as digital marketing, content management, and documentation. Jessica’s research involves mixed-methods studies of health information technology (HIT), which she described in her book, User Experience Research and Usability of Health Information Technology, and other publications. In addition to her research interest in the healthcare space, Jessica’s scholarly and academic interest includes a broad scope of TPC pedagogy, particularly exploring the engagement of students in social justice work, solving wicked problems, and improving digital literacy.

In this course, you will learn the importance of usability in technical communication and various usability testing methods. This course teaches the principles and practices of usability testing by having students design and execute a usability study of a piece of technical communication. The course will simulate a real-world project whereby students will collaborate to plan a usability study, create the necessary protocols and testing materials, execute the test, and report the findings.
