Only open to Honors College students. Applies toward English major or minor as required class (equivalent to CRW 3013).In this honors-level introductory course students will practice writing, reading, and responding to works of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Organized in three five-week units, students will begin working with the smallest possible unit of output in the given genre (six-word stories, for instance, in fiction) and ending reading a book-length work. Students will submit works of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction for both small-group peer review and full-class discussion. By the end of the course, students will have learned and applied critical vocabulary in all three genres, written responses to their own and their peers' work, and prepared themselves for genre-specific creative-writing courses.

This advanced poetry-writing workshop asks students to exercise and stretch their poetic strengths through writing in metrical and free-verse forms, reading full-length collections by acclaimed contemporary poets, and responding to each other's work with genre-specific vocabulary on a regular basis. The course will be divided into craft elements (imagery, address, figure, syntax, meter, rhyme, etc.) with weekly poetic prompts focused on each element. Students will also research, read, and write about living poets of their choosing in order to expand and hone their poetic affinities. By the end of the course, students will have revised and curated a portfolio of poems suitable for inclusion in a graduate creative-writing admissions packet or an application for a writer's conference.
