If you go to UCF and you’re looking to get out of the house more, I have good news! There are countless options and you’ll never be bored. The bad news is that you probably don’t know where to start.
If you’re not from a metropolitan area, the sprawling giant of combined suburbs, which is Orlando, may at first feel overwhelming. This is completely normal – Orlando is massive, and the list of potential activities could go on forever. To help cut through the noise, here are some Orlando spots that might get you started on feeling like a local.
Stardust Video and Coffee
Address: 1842 Winter Park Rd, Orlando, FL 32803
This is an iconic spot that needs no introduction. Known for its eclectic decor, this coffee shop/music venue is a great way to get introduced to local music in Orlando. During the day, the shop gets excellent natural lighting and is quiet for studying, with reasonably priced tea and coffee. The evening events are where Stardust really shines, though. And while you’re there, you can take a stroll around the corner to Park Ave CDs, a local record store with a large collection that often hosts album listening parties.
Drunken Monkey
Address: 444 N Bumby Ave, Orlando, FL 32803
Drunken Monkey is a local coffee shop open late, with a bit more of a relaxed vibe. This shop boasts excellent ambiance and delicious coffee, traits which make it a favorite study spot for UCF students. The menu boasts vegetarian and vegan options, too, so there’s something for everyone.
Jay Blanchard Park
Address: 2451 Dean Rd, Union Park, FL 32817
Blanchard Park is a hidden gem near UCF which provides a much needed escape from bustling Orlando life. With scenic trails for biking or jogging, riverside spots to chill, and picnic areas for hangouts or study sessions, it’s got something for everyone. They also offer tennis and basketball courts, fishing and kayaking, and kayaks can be rented from the RWC.
Econ River Wilderness Area
Address: 3795 Old Lockwood Rd, Oviedo, FL 32765
The Econ River Wilderness Area is a nature lover’s paradise tucked away in Oviedo. A short 5 minute drive from campus, this peaceful spot features hiking trails that wind through forests and along the beautiful Econlockhatchee River. This is the place to go to spend an afternoon outdoors and absolutely does not disappoint.
Writer’s Block Bookstore
Addresses: 316 N Park Ave, Winter Park, FL 32789 & 870 North Alafaya Trail, Orlando, FL 32828
Writer’s Block Bookstore is a highlight bookstore in Orlando, with two charming locations to explore. Both feature an impressive selection of books across genres, with plenty of recommendations. This shop has a coffee bar, and hosts many author events and book clubs. Plus, both locations are in walkable downtown locations, meaning a trip to Writer’s Block can become a day-long adventure.
These spots will help you start making the most of your time at UCF. From cozy coffee shops to scenic parks and unique bookstores, there’s always something new to explore around town. So, get out there and experience all that Orlando has to offer—before you know it, you’ll feel like a local.
