Worldwide, women face numerous challenges that interfere with their health and well being. Explorations of some of the biggest challenges they face include reproductive freedom, childbirth mortality, HIV/AIDS/STIs, no formal education, gender inequality and violence against them. The purpose is to bring about greater awareness, which leads to an improvement in their health status and well being.

Feminist Technologies for Learning Online

Various forms of online education and a stream of ever-evolving networked tools are sociotechnical systems that may constitute learning opportunities with distinct affordances for women. In this session, specific technologies and social contexts will be considered in light of their positive benefits for women and their power to bring about gender equity/advantage. An emphasis will be placed on tools that are freely available via the web. Dialogue with other participants and personal application will be encouraged.

National Science Foundation, STRIDE Grant- PLENARY SESSION Educating Colleagues about Inequality and Unconscious Bias

In this presentation, the implementation of a faculty STRIDE committee (Strategies and Tactics for Recruiting to Improve Diversity and Excellence) at Florida International University will be described. This National Science Foundation funded project over a three year period has been successful at increasing the number of women faculty that have been hired in science and engineering. Portions of the STRIDE workshop will be presented in an interactive discussion-workshop format to illustrate its usefulness as a method to educate faculty colleagues about inequality and unconscious bias in hiring and promotion. Best practices for hiring and retaining a diverse faculty will also be explained.
