Blake Scott, Ph.D.

Biography

I came to UCF in 2002, having previously taught at the University of Florida. When UCF created the Department of Writing & Rhetoric in 2011, I became its founding Associate Chair and Director of Degree Programs, leading the creation of three new undergraduate programs (including a B.A. in Writing & Rhetoric). At UCF, I have served as Vice Chair of the Faculty Senate (2020-present), United Faculty of Florida Grievance Chair, Provost Fellow (2012-2013), and Faculty Excellence Fellow (2017-2018). I've also worked on and, in some cases, helped lead of parts of other university initiatives, including those associated with Strategic Enrollment Planning, the Foundations of Excellence Transfer Initiative, Quality Enhancement Program, and revision of University Promotion & Tenure Guidelines.

With Lisa Meloncon, I was the founding co-editor of the new scholarly journal Rhetoric of Health & Medicine, published by the University Press of Florida / University of Florida Press, which won the Council of Editors of Learned Journals 2019 Best New Journal Award. With Catherine Gouge, I co-edit the same journal's "Graphic RHM" digital column.

My scholarship in the rhetoric of health and medicine (RHM) includes the collection, co-edited with Lisa Meloncon, Methodologies for the Rhetoric of Health & Medicine; my book Risky Rhetoric: AIDS and the Cultural Practices of HIV Testing, which won the National Communication Association Health Communication Division 2017 Distinguished Book Award; and articles in the Quarterly Journal of Speech, College English, Journal of Medical Humanities, Rhetoric Society Quarterly, and other places. More recently, I have been co-leading an interdisciplinary research team with funded studies using graphic medicine interventions for nurses and people living with HIV. Much of my RHM scholarship has been driven by the goal of advancing more just and effective public health policy arguments and efforts.

My scholarship professional and technical communication includes the collection, co-edited with Bernadette Longo and Katherine Wills, Critical Power Tools: Technical Communication and Cultural Studies; the textbook, co-authored by Melody Bowdon, Service-Learning in Technical and Professional Communication; and articles in College Composition and Communication, Technical Communication Quarterly, the Journal of Business and Technical Communication, and other places. Much of this scholarship has focused on advancing cultural, community-based, and social justice-oriented approaches to teaching professional and technical communication.

My scholarship on writing program development, design, and support of student learning--focusing on Writing & Rhetoric majors--has been published in College English, Composition Forum, WPA: Writing Program Administration, and other places.

I'm currently working on a book, tentatively titled "Rhetorical Rx," that brings together theories of rhetoric, risk, and transnational movement to analyze global risk conflicts around pharmaceutical access and regulation. My other transnational rhetorical work includes the collection, co-edited by Rebecca Dingo, The Megarhetorics of Global Development

I teach a wide array of rhetoric and writing courses across our department's first-year writing, upper-division, and M.A. programs, and in the College of Arts and Humanities' Texts & Technology Ph.D. program. Some of these have involved sustained community partnerships.

Taught by one of its founders, this course will explore the Rhetoric of Health & Medicine (RHM) as a burgeoning field that investigates the rhetorical dimensions of clinical care, public health, personal health management, patient advocacy, and other related practices. Because it might prove useful in your own studies, one focus of this course will be rhetorical methodology, and we’ll read from and talk to several prominent scholars in the field about how and why they designed their methodological approaches. Another, related focus will be on studies that aim to ameliorate health challenges and inequities. Through our exploration, we’ll gain tools not only for interpreting and engaging in rhetorical scholarship (including digital and multi-modal forms) but also for understanding and navigating health and medical rhetorics in our everyday lives. Major assignments will include a health literacy narrative paired with an annotated bibliography, a review essay, and a graphic medicine project (curricular, clinical, or advocacy-oriented); we’ll discuss ways to publish some of this work.
