Biography
Dr. Yoon Joo Hwang, Associate Professor of Music (Bassoon & Music Theory) at the University of Central Florida, has taught and performed throughout the U.S., Asia and Europe. Her multicultural education and performance backgrounds brought together a hybrid of teaching, research, and creative work nationally and internationally. Dr. Hwang founded and hosted the International Bassoon Meetup and the International Orchestral Excerpts Competition and the International Bassoon Unconventional Collaboration Competition for the 21st century bassoonists with key teachers around the world. Dr. Hwang organized a series of masterclasses for young bassoonists from five continents performing for the principal bassoonists from the Los Angeles Philharmonic (Whitney Crockett and Shawn Mouser), the New York Philharmonic (Judith LeClair and Kim Laskowski), Berlin Philharmonic (Stefan Schweigert), Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (Gustavo Nuñez and Simon Van Holen), Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra (Matthias Racz and Hans Agreda) and Vienna Philharmonic (Sophie Dervaux) among others.
Dr. Hwang was invited to give a lecture and perform including Columbia University, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, University of Southern California (USC), University of Michigan, University of North Carolina School of the Arts, University of Florida, Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Ewha Womans University, Hanyang University, Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, Shanghai Orchestra Academy and Shenzhen Arts School. She was invited to perform solo recitals for the International Double Reed Society (IDRS), the National College Music Society (CMS), the Florida Music Teachers Association, as well as at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York. She has performed with the Sarasota Orchestra, the Sarasota Opera and the Florida Orchestra, to name a few. Dr. Hwang founded the Tomo Bassoon Trio and the Duel Bassoon and Oboe Duo.
She has a diverse research portfolio and conducts interdisciplinary research, contributing in diverse ways to the field of music. Dr. Hwang has been invited to present scholarly research papers at meetings of the Association of Asian Studies, Society of Ethnomusicology, the College Music Society, the International Double Reed Society, the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, the Asia-Pacific Symposium for Music Education Research (Tokyo, Japan), the International Congress of the European Association for Music in Schools at the Pädagogische Hochschule Freiburg (Freiburg, Germany).
Dr. Hwang served the 2023 Norman Hooks Young Artist Competition Advisory Board Committee of the International Double Reed Society (IDRS) and she was appointed to serve as Vice President of Korean Relations of the Asian Double Reed Association (ADRA). Recently, Hwang was appointed to serve as a Visiting Professor at Seoul National University and Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea and served as a Visiting Scholar at Seoul National University, Korea National University of Arts and Korea University, a position that offers an unparalleled opportunity to advance her research into the influence of Western classical music on the modern contemporary era in Korea.
Dr. Hwang earned a D.M.A. from the University of Colorado Boulder under the guidance of Yoshi Ishikawa and an M.M. from UCLA, where she studied with Charles Coker and John Steinmetz. While studying at Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg in Germany, she worked with Günter Blahuschek of the Bamberger Symphoniker and Yoshi Tominaga of the Universität Mozarteum. She also studied at the University of Southern California with Shawn Mouser, Associate Principal Bassoonist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, and received a Performance Diploma from Boston University under Matthew Ruggiero, Associate Principal Bassoonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
