Biography
William Ayers is a teacher, researcher, writer, singer, and composer who lives and works in the Orlando area. As Associate Professor of Music Theory at the University of Central Florida, he teaches courses on harmony, counterpoint, post-tonal music, and the analysis of music in interactive media and video games.
Will graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in music theory and vocal performance from Belmont University in his home state of Tennessee before moving to Ohio to attend the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati for graduate study, where he completed a PhD dissertation on microtonal music.
Will’s current research applies ludomusicological concepts to music outside of video games, including concert music, film music, and theme park music, a subject for which he co-founded the Theme Park Music and Sound conference in 2024. His published work on video game music and sound has appeared in the Journal of Sound and Music in Games, for which he currently serves as Associate Editor, Music and the Moving Image, The Oxford Handbook of Video Game Music and Sound, and the Routledge Music and Screen Media Series, among other venues.
In addition to his teaching and research, Will is also an active composer and performer of choral music, singing regularly as a member of VoxO since 2022.
