As a mentee (Little), you will be matched with a UCF student mentor (Big). All Bigs and Littles meet as a group every week to learn about leadership and STEM.
Meeting Schedule
Meetings take place every Wednesday from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at UCF.
Eligibility to be a Little includes:
- In 7th grade
- Parental consent
- Make a semester (Spring) commitment to be a Little
- Be able to meet every Wednesday from 6:00pm to 7:30 p.m. in person at UCF
- Attend the Parent Orientation

SLAM, the Science Leadership and Mentoring program, promotes youth’s inspiration and excitement in STEM fields and careers while also building their leadership abilities. SLAM is an after-school, curriculum-based mentoring program pairing one 7th grade student (Little) with one UCF undergraduate student (Big).

As a mentor (Big), you will be matched with a 7th grade mentee (Little). All Bigs and Littles meet as every week in person at UCF to learn about Leadership and STEM. Participation as a Big may also be counted toward UCF Service Learning.
Meeting Schedule
Meetings take place every Wednesday from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at UCF.
Eligibility to be a Big includes:
- Good academic standing
- Clean background check
- Make a one-year (Fall and Spring) commitment to be a Big
- Be able to meet every Wednesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in person at UCF
- Attend all Big Meetings held once a month, Wednesday 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. in person at UCF
- Complete Youth Protection Program training with the Compliance Ethics and Risk Office
- Attend BOTH Big Trainings held on a Wednesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in person at UCF
- Preference will be given to STEM majors and/or Women’s and Gender Studies minors
- UCF undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply

Apply to be a BigBe a SLAM Facilitator
Once you have been a Big for at least one year and are in good standing with SLAM, you may apply to be a SLAM Facilitator!
Facilitators lead all Big and Little Meetings. All Facilitators meet once a week with the SLAM Program Manager to prepare for Little/Big Meetings. Becoming a Facilitator gives you a great opportunity to enhance and grow your leadership skills while making a difference not only in middle schoolers’ lives but also your college peers’ lives!
