The students of UCF Opera will perform A Double Bill of Fun — two charming chamber operas performed in English, with full costuming, staging, and orchestral accompaniment, each brimming with theatrical flair, vocal brilliance, and clever storytelling.
We open with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s The Impresario, a satirical backstage romp where two sopranos audition for the same position in an opera company — and neither is willing to share the spotlight. As egos clash and tempers flare, the impresario must navigate diva demands and artistic chaos. With spoken dialogue and sparkling arias, this opera hilariously exposes the drama behind the drama.
Following a brief intermission, we will launch into John Duke’s Captain Lovelock, a delightful one-act opera based on Ludvig Holberg’s farce The Changed Bridegroom. When an elderly and wealthy widow decides she must marry a young military man, her maid and daughters plot with the local marriage broker to teach her a lesson. This sets off a whirlwind of mistaken identities, romantic confusion, and comic twists. Duke’s lyrical score and witty libretto bring this tale of disguise and deception to life with warmth and charm.
Both operas are performed in English and designed for an intimate chamber setting, making them perfect for newcomers and seasoned opera lovers alike. Whether you’re drawn to the sparkle of Mozart’s satire or the mischief of Duke’s romantic farce, this double bill promises an experience full of laughter, intrigue, and — well — fun!
Join us as UCF Opera celebrates the joy of storytelling, the power of music, and the art of pretending—with a wink and a flourish.
