Pegasus PlayLab 2025

Join us for the seventh annual Pegasus PlayLab, a celebration of innovation and creativity in theatre! At Pegasus PlayLab, we serve as an arts incubator for the next generation of theatre. A place for creativity, passion, and storytelling, dedicated to nurturing emerging playwrights and launching new works into the spotlight. Get ready to immerse yourself in the world of theatre as you witness the early stages of development for these new productions.

What is Pegasus PlayLab?

Pegasus PlayLab is a festival dedicated to developing plays by emerging playwrights. Playwrights are invited to UCF's campus for a two-week residency to develop their new play with students and faculty. Audiences are to hear staged readings and experience a full production of a new play first workshopped at Orlando Shakes’ PlayFest. Follow these plays into the next stage of development and be part of the creative process with playwrights, casts and artistic teams!

When is Pegasus PlayLab?

Pegasus PlayLab spans six weeks starting mid-May through the end of June. Selected playwrights are expected to commit to a two-week residency within that timeframe.

What Should I Expect at a Workshop?

What you will see on stage is the culmination of 8 days of rehearsals, script changes and discussions between the actors, playwright, director, dramaturg, and designers. Actors will bring the new work to life in front of the audience with scripts in-hand and minimal staging.

After the performance, discuss what you saw and heard with the playwright, director, cast and the rest of the creative team. You play a crucial role in the work’s development through your feedback.

What Should I Expect at a Full Developmental Production?

This is a play that has already been through workshops and readings and is ready for a fully-staged production with a set, costumes, lighting and a full rehearsal schedule.

This does not mean that this is the final version of the script. After developmental productions, the playwright will use what they saw and the feedback you give to continue to revise the script.

How do I get involved as a UCF student?

All UCF students can audition to be in the readings and workshops. Auditions for Pegasus PlayLab are typically held in March. Check the Theatre UCF Production Audition page for the most up to date audition information. Design, technology and stage management students may also be assigned roles on the performances.

How Do I Submit My Play?

Please upload a draft of a full-length play and complete the required questions on the Pegasus PlayLab Google Form.

We are seeking four full-length plays, including devised works and Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) pieces, which we will rehearse for two weeks in collaboration with the playwright and subsequently present as workshop productions. There is a possibility that one play will be fully mounted into a production.

As an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer, UCF encourages all qualified applicants to apply, including women, veterans, individuals with disabilities, and members of traditionally underrepresented populations.

If you have any questions, please email ucfpegasusplaylab@gmail.com.

Visiting Hours

Playwright: Avery Lewis | Director: Tara Kromer
When Gram receives a terminal diagnosis, she’s placed in a senior care facility against her will, left to spend two lonely months in quiet resentment. Then, one morning, she heard a knock. Not just any knock, but a sudden, specific knock. It’s her granddaughter, Maggie. Upon learning why her grandmother has been locked away, Maggie refuses to let Gram fade into solitude. Week after week, she finds new ways to remind her that life still holds joy, even as they wrestle with the weight of choices made for them, the ache of the past, and the power of forgiveness.

“Aging is a privilege that not everyone gets to experience.”

It was this quote that I saw posted on Facebook that inspired me to write Visiting Hours. I, like many others, have had friends pass away long before it was their time to go, teaching me the hard lesson that growing older isn’t an occurrence to fear, but the result of a life well lived.

While exploring these ideas of aging, loss, grief, and intergenerational relationships, I realized that I was writing more than just a story about the beauty of life. I was also writing about the nuances and strengths of women. The characters of Grams, Angie, and Maggie became so special to me, and I wanted to uplift their stories as much as I could. It’s because of this that I decided to take the Bechdel Test to the next level; Visiting Hours wouldn’t simply feature female characters, it would only have female characters. Women wouldn’t need to talk to each other about something other than men, they wouldn’t mention men at all. Because there’s more to women’s stories than love interests and heartbreaks, and their lives don’t end after thirty- it’s merely beginning.

Visiting Hours is a love letter to the women in our lives who have built us, taught us, and shaped us. May their impact never be taken for granted.

– Avery Lewis, Playwright

At its core, Visiting Hours is about what we carry across generations, silences, and hospital room thresholds. It’s a story of three women connected by blood, distance, and the ache of things left unsaid. Set in a sterile senior care facility, the play invites us into a space where memory, grief, and humor collide.

What struck me most while working on this piece is how much tenderness can live beneath sarcasm, and how much love can go unspoken when survival becomes the priority. Maggie’s presence—vibrant, persistent, a burst of color in a whitewashed world—offers the possibility of connection, even in the face of loss and despair.

Visiting Hours doesn’t tie things up neatly. It asks us to sit in our discomfort, to listen, and to reconsider the conversations we’ve been avoiding. My hope is that audiences leave this play not with answers, but with the courage to ask questions of their loved ones and of themselves.

– Leigh Green, Associate Director and Dramaturg

Building on last year’s Daring to Dream and 2023’s Building a Shared Home workshop, Moments of Wonder is a collaboration between TheatreUCF, UCF’s Student Accessibility Services, and Central Florida Community Arts, with the goal of creating a community of collective care where all participants learn from each other, and each contribute to the final product.

This type of collaborative creation is rare in university theatre settings and challenges us to reconsider traditional theatre production schedules, leadership structures, and rehearsal models. Our activities in the first week consisted of ensemble-building, visual art exercises, examination of personal objects, embodied memories, and improvised scenes and movement. From these explorations, we selected moments that impacted us most and arranged them into a story framework, assembling a final piece that connects the webs of each participants’ individual experiences and offers a glimpse into the collective mind of our ensemble.

Beyond the connection of our cast in rehearsals, we have been building an ongoing inclusive creative community since the project’s inception in 2023 with several organizers and participants returning to the project in each iteration. This year, Ralph and I brought this model of inclusive creative practice to the New London Barn Playhouse in New Hampshire and facilitated a truncated version of this process with middle and high schoolers with and without disabilities. This fall, we will share our inclusive devising model with students and educators at UCP of Central Florida. We are grateful for each of the foundations, community partners, festival organizers, and participants who believe in the value of this work, and we hope to continue layering and exploring possibilities in the future.

- Sage Tokach, Director

Responding to the theme "Moments of Wonder: Stories That Endure," this devised theatre project brought together students and community members with all abilities to collaboratively create an original piece of theatre. Inspired by Wanda Gág's centenarian children's literature, including Millions of Cats, Snippy and Snappy, and Nothing at All, we embarked on a journey of exploration, improvisation, and reflection to uncover stories that resonate and invoke awe, relationship, and transformation.

Participants explored the extraordinary within the ordinary through a process that employed body, voice, movement, and multiple performing objects such as yarn, fabric, shadow theatre, and light. Even when the AC unexpectedly went out in the rehearsal room, hand fans became more than just a tool to fight the Floridian heat—they transformed into performing objects, adding another layer of creativity to our process.

From the playful exploration of personal objects to the realization that behind every person lies a complex and vivid story, our exploration of WONDER led us to the concept of SONDER—the profound awareness that every passerby has a life as rich and intricate as our own, filled with their dreams, struggles, and experiences. As one participant reflected, "For someone, these are just tap shoes, but for me, I could talk about them for hours—about the sweat they've seen and the dreams they've carried me toward."

This process has also revealed the beauty of collaboration: the balance between individuality and community and the power of unity in creating something greater than ourselves. Whether through the creation of a yarn web to symbolize connection, the interplay of light and dark to reveal hidden depths, or the freedom of shared movement, participants have danced with the beauty of belonging with patience and in honor of individual voice.

At its heart, this project is about discovery—of ourselves, each other, and the stories that endure. Our most profound experiences of awe have come from embracing the unknown and allowing the process to take us where we did not expect. As we share this performance with you, we invite you to join us in celebrating awe and embracing that there is not just "you" here in the world but "us," a living collective of lives, stories, and dreams. We invite you to step into this shared journey with us, embrace the wonder of the unknown, and discover what this experience will reveal—for all of us.

- Ineta Lopez, Dramaturg

Public Wickedness

Playwright: Lee Osorio | Director: Adonis Perez-Escobar
Based on a true story, Public Wickedness explores a lesser-known chapter in Queer History. In 1966, Laud Humphreys is searching for a dissertation topic … and for so much more. When his advisor encourages him to choose something that scares him, Laud dives headfirst into the world of tearooms — public restrooms where men meet to have sex. Determined to prove that these men aren’t monsters, he learns that they are something much more complicated. They’re human. Can Laud make peace with their — and his own — fallibility, or will his desire to deny who he is ultimately destroy him?

Public Wickedness contains adult themes, explicit language, and sexual content. Viewer discretion is advised.

What you are about to hear is based on a true story. It’s a Queer story. It’s a story about the men who have sex in public restrooms and the scientist who studied them. But more than anything, it is a story about the roles we play. It’s about the costumes we wear that no longer fit comfortably and the ones we’ve been forced to wear so long we’ve forgotten who we are underneath them. It’s a story about a man named Laud Humphreys who is trying to find the role, the costume, the words that will finally make his world make sense.

The play you are about to hear is in a very similar position as Laud. They both desperately want to know what they have to offer the world and if they’re any good. These are questions that can only be answered in community.

Tonight, you’ve agreed to be a part of the community that receives this fledgling play. Thank you. Whether the play flies or falls (or the most likely scenario of doing some of both), I will learn an invaluable amount from you about where it is and where it needs to go from here.

May this story bring you closer to finding the role/s that make you feel most alive.

- Lee Osorio, Playwright

What does it mean to be truly authentic? Public Wickedness asks us to consider the complex identities we carry, who we are at work, in love, in private, and in secret. What happens when those identities conflict? What if the version of ourselves we present to the world is easier, but ultimately unsustainable?

Inspired by a true story in queer history, Public Wickedness explores the ripple effects of actions taken with good intentions, some of which harm more than help. It challenges us to ask: Is an act inherently wrong, or does its impact define its morality? And if we never see the ripple, does it still matter?

At the center is Laud Humphreys, a man torn between the comfort of a constructed identity and the terrifying clarity of self-understanding. His journey invites us to reflect on the masks we wear, and what it costs to remove them.

- Sav Debaylo, Dramaturg

Many years ago, I was reading a book about Shakespeare that discussed how his plays were almost lost. It happened during the Interregnum, when the Puritans overthrew the British monarchy and imposed authoritarian rule in England. They closed the theatres, burned Shakespeare’s Globe to the ground and outlawed all forms of entertainment. The English, caught in the grips of extremism, and deprived of theatre, began to lose touch with who they were.

The thought of almost losing Shakespeare haunted me. What would the world be like without those plays? There is not a human situation or condition that isn’t contained in them. Without Shakespeare, we quite simply wouldn’t be who we are.

As I explored the history, I discovered the drolls, the outlaw actors and blackamoor musicians who took to the streets during this dark era to perform forbidden comedy routines for a populace starved for laughter. It was the drolls—the masters of low comedy—who kept the theatre alive during the Puritan crackdown and are credited with saving Shakespeare from the dustbins of history.

That the drolls, the vulgar clowns of the street, were instrumental in delivering to us the world’s greatest poet became for me an exploration of the necessity of theatre and its power to restore a society to its senses.

Many thanks to UCF for this workshop production, the actors who brought their talent, energy and hearts to the process and Nick Bublitz for so beautifully excavating the comedy and tragedy in the script. I am deeply grateful.

- Deborah Brevoort, Playwright

As a dramaturg, I love collecting and sharing information that enriches and adds depth to a production. Over the five weeks of this process I’ve read 7 books, 20+ articles, and an array of additional content in dictionaries, historical sources, museum sites, and more to add the maximum possible life and context to this production. There’s ample research and records about the Interregnum, Oliver Cromwell, English monarchs, and chronistic politics. However, two notable histories still lack adequate attention: theatrical activity during the ban, and the long-overlooked presence of African immigrants in England since the 1200s.

Conversations about Black communities in the west often begin with the transatlantic slave trade, but this framing erases the agency, humanity, and contributions of Black individuals in earlier periods. Records show Black citizens at every level of Tudor society – as craftsmen, merchants, artists, servants, and members of the royal court. Their stories challenge dominant narratives and reveal a richer, more complex history.

Recent scholarship has uncovered evidence of Black individuals as contemporaries of Shakespeare and active participants in England’s artistic and cultural life. The stories of the “blackamoors” featured in our production are not only historically grounded but deeply relevant.

The Drolls, with its wit and subversive energy, invites us to rediscover this neglected past. It affirms the vital presence of Black English citizens in preserving theatre during the Puritan Interregnum and beyond as the writers, performers, and artists that keep the craft alive.
