Identity: Reflections of Self opened May 5 at the Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens, showcasing the work of students from UCF’s School of Visual Arts and Design (SVAD) in a collaborative juried exhibition centered on personal identity.
Using a variety of media, the artists turned inward to share their personal stories with audiences across Central Florida. The exhibition features colorful portraits and abstract sculptures that explore themes of resilience, introspection and personal growth. This partnership connects students with a professional museum environment, helping them build portfolios, expand their networks and gain experience that supports future careers in the arts.
“This collaboration allows students to present their work in a professional museum setting while exploring the deeply personal theme of identity,” said Shannon Lindsey, director of the UCF Art Gallery. “It also strengthensconnections between academic and cultural institutions and enriches the community through the voices of emerging artists.”
Professional Experience Beyond the Classroom
For many emerging artists, the opportunity to showcase work in a museum is a milestone that often comes much later in a career. Participating in a juried exhibition provides early exposure to the professional art world, allowing them to build their portfolios, connect with arts professionals and present their work to a broader audience. Experiences like this can play an important role in shaping an artist’s confidence and professional development.
“Having my work selected for the exhibition was an incredible opportunity,” said Marlon Green Jr., a master’s student at SVAD. “Being part of an exhibition at the Polasek Museum allowed me to contribute to a larger conversation that encourages new perspectives and inspires both artists and the community.”
The exhibition was juried by arts professionals, providing students with experience navigating a competitive selection process similar to those they may encounter throughout their careers. Three students walked away with awards and cash prizes during the opening reception. Sydney Bosch received Best in Show for Rene, Marlon Green Jr. earned the Curator’s Choice Award for Caught in One’s Own Consciousness, and Julia Hofacker Kingsly received the People’s Choice Award for Perception.
“This was my first painting accepted into a museum I really wanted to be in,” said Bosch, a drawing and painting student at SVAD. “Receiving an award at the opening reaffirmed my decision to pursue art and reminded me how important it is to share that work with others.”
Engaging the Community Through Art
Beyond exhibiting their work, students also took on leadership roles through public programming connected to the exhibition. Graduate students Stacie Becker and Marlon Green Jr. each led unique workshops, gaining experience in arts education and public engagement.
Becker’s workshop, Pages of You: Crafting Your Personal Journal, introduced participants to bookbinding while encouraging creative reflection. Each participant left with their own personalized book.
Green led Flowing into Creativity: The Art of Paint Pouring, a hands-on workshop that introduced participants to color theory and fluid painting techniques.
Together, the exhibition and accompanying workshops help bridge the gap between the classroom and career, giving emerging artists the skills, confidence and credentials they can carry forward into their professional practice.
