“Austin Winsberg, Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner set out to mine comedy in this rite-of-passage angst with a musical called First Date, which opened on Broadway in 2013 for a five-month run. The show is onstage in a perky production at Theatre UCF and it helps the show immensely that the appealing cast is so young. They still seem wide-eyed and who knows? Maybe the dating clichés that stock this story are fresh to them as opposed to those of us more jaded (read: older) who have seen and heard it all before.”
“The premise of the show is simple: Casey and Aaron have been sent on a blind date by a mutual acquaintance. The audience gets to know them as they get to know each other. The most amusing part of the staging is how a five-member chorus plays all the other roles in the story — from the waiter who wants to be a start to Aaron’s lady-killer best friend, from Casey’s nagging sister to her overly dramatic BFF.”
