For 10 years, the James R. Hopes Art Scholarship has helped UCF students pursuing art careers continue to chase their dreams. This year’s three recipients of the $3,000 award are Joane Lamisere, Cat Penagos and Zoraye Cyrus.
Artist Kevin Haran gave a “lunch and learn” lecture highlighting his exhibition of art, Materiel: Sculptures and Works on Paper. Presented by the UCF Community Veterans History Project and the UCF Veterans Academic Resource Center, Haran’s talk focused on his influences and methods of creating art .

UCF alumni Gabe Cortese ’17 and Sheherazade Thenard ’18 have work featured in the Orlando Science Center’s Fusion: A STEAM Gallery through April 23. In their exhibition, “Identity and the Landscape,” Cortese and Thenard investigate figuration within an idealized landscape to explore complexities of their respective identities.
The Florida Prison Education Project (FPEP) has received a $50,000 National Endowment for the Arts Artworks grant to support “Illuminating the Darkness: Our Carceral Landscape,” a project that will provide a series of visual arts workshops for men and women incarcerated in Central Florida.
UCF Faculty Excellence chooses 31 UCF women to honor throughout Women’s History Month each year. For 2019, 10 of the 31 faculty members are from the College of Arts and Humanities.
