Music and Lyrics by Mark Hollmann
Book and Lyrics by Greg Kotis

Imagine yourself in a dystopian city where a water shortage has made private restrooms illegal, and citizens must pay to use public restrooms. Now get ready to laugh as this winner of three Tony Awards somehow turns a public crisis into a hilarious musical satire.

When the corrupt Urine Good Company’s greed leads to increased fees and the banishment of offenders to the dreaded “Urinetown,” a young man named Bobby Strong leads a rebellion to overthrow the oppressive system. However, his efforts are complicated by the arrival of Hope Cladwell, the daughter of UGC’s CEO, and the eventual revelation that her father’s harsh water rationing is actually keeping the town from total dehydration. Ultimately, Hope’s efforts to provide free water lead to the depletion of the remaining water, resulting in the town’s demise and a cautionary tale about unchecked power and environmental apathy.

URINETOWN is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com

Urinetown isn’t really about bathrooms; it’s a sharp satire on survival, power, and the dangers of ignoring consequences. First staged at the 1999 New York International Fringe Festival and later moving to Broadway in 2001, the show uses toilet humor as an unlikely vehicle for biting political and social critique.

The story unfolds in a drought-stricken city where public toilets are privatized, and “relief” comes at a steep price. Failure to pay means banishment to the mysterious “Urinetown.” At the center stands Bobby Strong, the idealistic hero who challenges the corrupt Urine Good Company. Yet the play’s sting lies less in his rebellion than in the fallout of resistance without foresight.

Influenced by Brecht’s distancing techniques, Urinetown interrupts its own melodrama with exaggerated numbers and self-aware asides. Its absurdity provokes laughter that unsettles, leaving us with a cautionary tale about the peril of easy solutions to complex problems.
