U.S. History classes at UCF have been transformed by tangible artifacts and these historic costumes for students to examine, analyze and connect with historical narratives.

Peek inside U.S. History classrooms where Professors Kristina Tollefsen and Alicia Duffy have transformed traditional history lectures into an interdisciplinary, engaging learning experience by adding historic costuming to the rich environment of tangible artifacts that Professor Duffy provides for AMH2010 (U.S. History 1492-1877) and AMH2020 (U.S. History 1877-present) students to examine, analyze, and connect with historical narratives.

Kristina and Alicia met after attending an Excellence in Teaching Workshop, where Alicia shared her intentional and tactile approach to teaching American History. Specializing in Material Culture, Alicia often wears vintage clothing or presents unique artifacts during her American History lectures. Recognizing the valuable educational opportunities that might arise from the extensive assortment of theater costumes, Kristina eagerly opened the door to a treasure trove of period ensembles. Always up for an adventure, Alicia began to wear pieces from the UCF collection in her Fall 2024 classes. This unique partnership between UCF departments enhances students’ education by fostering a deeper understanding of how clothing reflects societal changes, class structures, and cultural values throughout American history.
