Immerse yourself in a lyrical tale centered on two sisters, Helena and Belmira. Inspired by Brazilian folklore, this beautiful play explores the depths of life’s relationships.

Three days before Belmira’s wedding, a mysterious man emerges in the sisters’ small riverside village. His presence allows deep emotions and unspoken desires to float to the surface, creating waves in an already complex sibling relationship. Dive into a world where myth and reality intertwine to explore true love, compromise, and the choices that transform our lives.

“The River Bride” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. www.concordtheatricals.com

Some plays reveal hidden magic through the collaborators that bring them to life. This piece sparked some of the most expansive conversations: about Love, textures and how they alter us, the power of patterns of three, the role of myths, folk-, and fairy-tales in society, and the qualities of rain. Rain on skin; on the water, shattering the surface; the thick and sweet tension of rain yet to come; the storm’s release and tumult; and its continual cycle of gathering-dispersing in the rainforest.

This story, like all human stories, cycles like the rain. This adaptability is part of the pleasure and power of myth. Tales like El Boto Cor de Rosa endure because of their cultural flexibility, their ability to grow with the people that need to tell them. Like all myths about humans, monsters, and the water that both divides and connects us, this play offers an invitation to reflect and transform.

—Dramaturg, Alyssa Barrack

In approaching The River Bride, we were immediately drawn to its mythic architecture and the ways in which it evokes both personal and cultural memory. The text conjures the formative power of childhood storytelling—narratives that blur the boundaries between the real and the magical, shaping how we perceive the world.

What captivates us in this play is its negotiation of ambiguity: the tension between joy and loss, perception and deception, continuity and rupture. Like the cycles of rain that frame the dramaturg’s reflections, the story itself gathers, releases, and renews – exploring how patterns of human behavior both repeat and transform.

Our staging leans into the theatre’s capacity to materialize these questions through design and imagination, revealing the liminal space where myth and reality converge. We hope this production not only transports you in its world but also sparks a deeper reflection on the stories we share – across generations and cultures – and why they matter.
