Set in Pittsburgh in 1936, The Piano Lesson is the story of an African-American family’s resilience through the connections shared with their piano, an instrument with the power to conjure both real ghosts and imaginary burdens. For each of them the piano is a symbol. For some it is it is a symbol of legendary bondage and to others, the potential for joy. Family conflicts over the piano’s future reveal the many unseen forces threatening their unity, hope and strength.
