Dramaturgy Note
Based on Carlo Goldini’s The Servant of Two Masters, an 18th century play in the style of commedia dell’arte, One Man, Two Guvnors was originally commissioned by Nicholas Hytner for London’s National Theatre. Playwright Richard Bean gave it an update, setting it in the raffish seaside town of Brighton in the swinging early sixties, a place suspended between the world of the seedy and fashionable, where one could escape and transform. Add in characters from different classes, with varied accents, lots of physical comedy, and a dash of skiffle music (the folk style precursor to British invasion groups like The Beatles) and farcical hilarity ensues. Hytner warns us, “It’s old-fashioned low comedy. But low comedy with a really, really ancient pedigree.” Upon further evaluation, however, beneath the delightful silliness is a surprisingly sweet love story. Budding romance, plus a healthy dose of hijinks, equals one fun, heart-warming night at theatre.
