Fiddler on the Roof takes place in 1905 Anatevka, Russia, where Tevye, a father of five, must perform a dangerous dance, balancing his culture’s firmly held traditions with his daughters’ happiness. Meanwhile, Jewish citizens all around Russia have been forced from their homes and kicked out of Russia. For now, the Jews in Anatevka live in peace and harmony, but life can be unpredictable.

This play was initially inspired by Sholem Aleichem’s series of short stories, “Tevye the Dairyman.” Unfortunately, Aleichem died before he could complete the series. In the 1950s, an off-Broadway musical called Tevye and his Daughters was produced by Arnold Perl. However, it never made it to Broadway. Critics and investors believed the play was “too Jewish” and would not appeal to a general audience. Despite this, playwrights on Broadway were not ready to give up on the amazing potential of this concept. In 1964, Joseph Stein wrote Fiddler on the Roof. To solve the issue of being too focused on Judaism, director Jerome Robbins suggested that they focus on the idea of tradition. The show was an immediate hit. Fiddler on the Roof ran for 3,242 performances on Broadway, making it the 19th longest running production on Broadway.

During the time of Fiddler on the Roof, Jews were being persecuted in Russia and treated as second-class citizens. While antisemitism has been alive long before the 20th century, the assassination of the Tsar Alexander II made it spike drastically. His heir, Alexander III, blamed the Jewish population for the death of his father, causing waves of antisemitic violence known as pogroms to hit Jewish settlements. During these pogroms, the Russian government started kicking Jews out of their territory, believing that Jewish citizens disrupted the Russians’ ways of living due to their different traditions.

An essential part of the play is the diversity in thought between different generations, especially when it comes to traditions and customs. Just like how Gen Z and Gen X think very differently, generations in 20th century Russia had very different ideals. Tevye and his generation believed strongly in following traditions and their faith. They saw tradition as an anchor to keep them alive and help them flourish, almost like a rulebook on what to do and what not to do. Meanwhile, the younger generation strayed away from the older traditions, instead wanting to live more independently. They saw the rulebook more like a guide, which has instructions, but it is up to their judgement to decide what is right for themselves, no matter what tradition demands. So, what happens when two vastly different ideals clash? Will one overcome the other? Or is there a middle ground that can be reached?
