The School of Performing Arts is proud to welcome to the faculty Dr. Yoon Joo Hwang, Assistant Professor of Bassoon.
Recently, Dr. Hwang held teaching positions at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Pasadena Conservatory of Music, and Idyllwild Summer Arts Academy in California. In addition, she has taught several courses at the University of Colorado Boulder.
As a performer, Dr. Hwang has performed recitals and toured with numerous orchestras in Germany, Asia, and the United States. Recently, she was selected to performed at the International Double Reed Society in Tokyo, Japan. In addition, her involvement in various collaborative settings has given her an international reputation. Most notably, she established the Korean Double Reed Society in Seoul, Korea, and now serve as an Executive Coordinator.
Beyond her teaching and performance experiences, Dr. Hwang has a diverse research portfolio. She has presented at the national College Music Society (CMS) conference on “Global Transformation and Water Conservation: Mobilizing Musicians to Assuage the National Drought Crisis”. Her article, “How Asian Identity Impacts Asian Performers in Classic Music: East Asians meet Western Musical Culture” was accepted and published in the Journal of Ewha Music Research Institute. This fall, Dr. Hwang will present at the CMS conference in Vancouver, British Columbia on “Diversity and Inclusion: The Keys to Understanding, Mentoring, and Recruiting Asian International Students in a Competitive Global Market Place.”
Dr. Hwang holds degrees from the University of Colorado Boulder, where she earned a Doctor of Musical Arts in Bassoon Performance and Music Pedagogy, UCLA, where she earned a Master’s of Music in Bassoon Performance, and at Sookmyung Women’s University in Seoul, Korea. Dr. Hwang studied at the University of Southern California under under Shawn Mouser (Associate Principal Bassoonists of the Los Angeles Philharmonic) and holds a Performance Diploma from Boston University.
