Dr. Leandra Preston-Sidler was invited by the American Association of University Women’s (AAUW) New Smyrna branch to speak on October about Gender and Community Activism at their membership meeting. The audience included approximately thirty active AAUW members involved in their own community work, particularly raising money for scholarships to support girls pursuing STEM education and careers. Dr. Preston-Sidler spoke about her life of activism, particularly the organization she founded, Animal Safehouse Program of Brevard, as well as the work of the Women’s and Gender Studies Program at UCF, encouraging audience members to tap into everyday activisms and to use activism to cope with tragedy, including recent natural disasters. Please consider joining AAUW at UCF or AAUW Orlando/Winter Park (or AAUW in your own communities). For more information, visit AAUW national chapter site.
Dr. Bubriski-McKenzie was an invited speaker at the AAUW Flagler Branch meeting in April 2017. Dr. Bubriski-McKenzie spoke about the Young Women Leaders Program (YWLP) and the recent AAUW Community Action Grant YWLP received in 2016-2017. She discussed how the grant allowed YWLP to implement a STEM focused sub-program within the traditional YWLP curriculum.
