A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder invites audience members to join Theatre UCF for a show full of antics, love and of course… murder.
Director Mark Brotherton jokingly asks, “Who hasn’t fantasized about killing someone? Will they do it, can they do it, will they be caught?” This Tony Award-winning musical comedy depicts the adventures of Monty, who discovers that he is ninth in-line to inherit an earldom and plots the demise of those ahead of him. Each murder is more ridiculous and funnier than the last.
“My favorite part about doing this show is getting to experience this ludicrous, wonderful story every night,” says Ryan Koch, who plays lead character Monty. “This show is just so silly.” He hopes the magic of the show pulls viewers into the scintillating world on stage. “I can’t wait to see if audiences catch onto the “game” of the show and decide to go along with the antics. I look forward to establishing a direct connection with each audience.”
While Koch may be playing the central character of the production, he explains that another actor brings new levels of hilarity to the story. “I have to hand it to my co-star, Darren Escarcha Cajipo, who plays upwards of eight different characters every night and does it brilliantly.” Escarcha Cajipo tackles a huge challenge in this role with each of his eight characters being different ages and genders, making for an incredible amount of costume and make-up changes. “I’m excited for the audience to see the work, not just from the actors, but also the amazing set and costume designs!” says Escarcha Cajipo. Overall, the production contains over 100 elaborate costumes.
For Brotherton, directing Gentleman’s Guide has been a challenge full of rewards. “What makes it fun is introducing the world of play to young students. Although the show is more difficult than it looks, the moments watching students overcome these hurdles is incredibly exciting!”
Those who see A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder are in for a night of fantastic spectacle. As Koch says, “this show has something for everyone: romance, hilarity, singing, dancing, touching moments, love triangles and (best of all) funny, tastefully-done murders.”
