Finding Home: The Global Refugee Crisis

Sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, and inspired by MacArthur Foundation Fellow Dinaw Mengestu’s first novel, The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears (2007), the UCF Art Gallery invites artists to contribute contemporary responses to the global refugee crisis in the upcoming exhibition: Finding Home: The Global Refugee Crisis
Exhibition Themes include:
- Borders as geographical and symbolic dividing lines
- Displacement, asylum seeking, and migration
- Refugee camps and detention centers
- Resettlement cities
- Political responses to the refugee crisis
The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears, which has been called “a great African novel, a great Washington novel and a great American novel” (The New York Times Book Review), alternates between the present and the past to tell the story of Sepha Stephanos, an Ethiopian shopkeeper in a D.C. neighborhood undergoing gentrification.
Exhibition: January 8th – February 2nd, 2018
Entry Deadline: September 30th, 2017
Eligibility: All artists 18 and over may enter. Postage to and from the gallery is the responsibility of the artist. However, selected artists will be awarded a modest honorarium to off-set expenses.
Media: Applicants can submit up to 10 images of applicable and available artwork. 2-Dimensional and 3-dimensional works of all media are accepted for submission. Installation artists should include a brief description of spatial needs and timeframe for install. The gallery can support digital art submissions and will exhibit digital works via USB drive (provided by artist) on a wall mounted 48” flat-screen TV.
Submission Materials: To apply, please send the following:
- CV (include full name, mailing address, phone, email, and artist website [if applicable])
- Artist Statement – briefly describe your professional art practice, research, and conceptual motivations
- Exhibition Statement – briefly describe how your work applies to one or more of the exhibition themes (1. Borders as geographical and symbolic dividing lines 2. Displacement, asylum seeking, and migration 3. Refugee camps and detention centers 4. Resettlement cities 5. Political responses to the refugee crisis
- Up to 10 individual jpeg images of applicable and available work (at least 1000 [in one direction] pixels and 300dpi resolution) – exhibition will be curated by images submitted. Video files can be submitted by URL via Submittable.
- Image Details includes: title, media, size, and date for each image

Notification: Accepted artists will be notified via email no later than October 30th, 2017
Shipping and Receiving: Accepted artworks will need to be received to the UCF Art Gallery NO LATER than Monday, December 18th, 2017 at 5:00pm. Artwork must be professionally presented and ready to hang when received by the gallery and include special instructions and/or special hardware. Return shipping label MUST be included with artwork.
Return Shipping: Artworks will be packaged and shipped via return shipping information and payment provided by the artist no later than Friday, February 16th, 2018.
