The Flying Horse Big Band is one of UCF’s premiere performing ensembles, making appearances around the U.S. and abroad at the Montreux, Switzerland, and North Sea Jazz Festival. The group has produced four albums on the national jazz charts, B.M.O.C, Into the Mystic, The Blues is Alright, and Jazz Town, all released on the university’s own Flying Horse Records.
The Flying Horse Big Band has performed alongside guests including Randy Brecker, Bob Berg, Michael Mossman, James Moody, Nick Brignola, Harry Allen, Steve Turre, Rodney Holmes, Terry Gibbs, Marvin Stamm, Mulgrew Miller, John Swana, Kevin Mahogany, Lou Donaldson and Eric Alexander. In 2005, the ensemble premiered Sam Rivers’ work for double big band with his RIVBEA orchestra. Former members of the band can be found performing on the Grammys and for a variety of TV shows in Los Angeles. Others have become music professors at universities around the nation.
