The UCF College of Arts and Humanities announces the appointment of Dr. Yamile Silva as professor of Spanish and chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures.
Silva is a scholar of Hispanic literatures and cultures whose teaching, research, and leadership focus on Spanish American and Caribbean literature, colonial and early modern studies, and gender and sexuality studies.
She joins UCF with extensive experience as a researcher, educator, and academic leader. Silva earned her Ph.D. and M.A. in Hispanic Literatures and Cultures from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and her B.A. in Modern Languages and Linguistics from the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia.
Her scholarly work includes numerous peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and edited volumes. She currently serves as editor-in-chief of REGS/Journal of Gender and Sexuality Studies and was recently elected to serve on the Latin American Studies Association Executive Council as Sections Representative.
Silva sees this role as an opportunity to support faculty and students while advancing the department’s commitment to language study, research, and interdisciplinary humanities education.
“Joining UCF and the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures is a tremendous honor,” said Silva. “I am inspired by the outstanding work that has brought the department to where it is today, and I see my role as building on that legacy — supporting our faculty’s research, championing our students’ growth, and opening new pathways for the department to flourish. I cannot wait to be part of this community and to grow together.”
In her new role, Silva will guide the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures while supporting its faculty, students, and academic programs.
