The UCF College of Arts and Humanities announces the reappointment of Dr. James Campbell as chair of the Department of English for a second five-year term.
Campbell has served as chair of the Department of English since 2021, providing leadership during a period of significant institutional, disciplinary, and societal change. Throughout his first term, he supported faculty, advanced academic programs and worked to promote student success within the department.
A member of the UCF faculty since 1996, Campbell brings extensive experience as a scholar, educator and academic leader to the role. Before becoming department chair, he served as director of graduate programs in English, overseeing the department’s master’s programs in Technical Communication and Literary, Cultural, and Textual Studies, as well as the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program.
Campbell sees his continued service as an opportunity to build on the department’s accomplishments while supporting faculty, students, and the future of English studies at UCF.
Campbell says, “I look forward to continuing to work with the English Department’s faculty, staff, and students toward a more humane and literate future.”
Campbell earned his Ph.D. in English from the University of Notre Dame. His research focuses on British and Irish literature since 1885, war and literature, sexuality theory and science fiction. He is the author of Oscar Wilde, Wilfred Owen, and Male Desire: Begotten, Not Made and has published scholarship on sexuality in science fiction, queer theory in British drama and war poetry criticism.
Under Campbell’s leadership, the Department of English will continue its work in teaching, research and creative scholarship while supporting the success of its faculty and students.
