Last month, WMFE covered how some Eatonville residents were fighting to preserve the land where the first school for Black children in Central Florida once stood. Now, the Eatonville Town Council has voted against rezoning the site, reports the station. This has effectively blocked a developer’s plans to turn it into a mixed housing community.
Among the crowd was UCF professor and historian Scot French. “I think this is exciting,” said French. “I mean it’s democracy in action. I like the idea that it now creates an opportunity to talk to the school board to bring to the Orange County Public Schools this citizens statement.”
