Dr. Ann Gleig’s new book American Dharma: Buddhism Beyond Modernity explores the evolution of American Buddhism. By examining the cultural shifts through a modern and postmodern lens, Gleig argues that clear differences arise between “Traditional Buddhism” and “American Buddhism”. Cultural movements such as Black Lives Matter and #MeToo have also influenced the developments in American Buddhism.

Faculty members from across the college were honored at the 2019 Founders’ Day Honors Convocation, which recognizes UCF faculty members and students from across disciplines for their academic achievements, contributions and tenures.

Dr. Luis Favela has been accepted as a fellow at the University of Pittsburgh. This highly competitive fellowship will allow him to conduct research and network with researchers from top institutions. He will be conducting research based on previous research and publications on the topic of universality and neuroscience.

UCF Lecturer Mark Fagiano has won the highly competitive Robert Papazian Essay Competition. As the winner, he will receive a cash prize and have his winning entry as lead article in a special edition of the International Journal of Philosophical Studies on empathy.

The Al-Ghazali Endowed Professorship will support professor Cyrus Zargar in continuing to grow the Islamic Studies program at UCF.

Philosophy professor Cyrus Ali Zargar’s book “The Polished Mirror: Storytelling and the Pursuit of Virtue in Islamic Philosophy and Sufism” was discussed by a panel of experts at a recent Society for the Study of Muslim Ethics conference.

The Al-Ghazali Program in Islamic Studies hosted internationally recognized scholar, Dr. Francis Robinson of the Royal Holloway, University of London. He presented the keynote address at a forum, titled “Islamic Traditions of Learning: Education and Ethics in Central and South Asia.”

The UCF Ethics Bowl team is heading to the national Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl for a second year in a row, after placing second at the 2018 Mid-Atlantic Regional Ethics Bowl.

Administrative Assistant Cathy Baust has retired from the Philosophy Department after 26 years of service with the University of Central Florida.

Dr. Ann Gleig will be attending two prominent conferences in Australia the first week of November give research talks on her new book.
