As the sale of the land where the first Black school in Central Florida once stood closes in, some residents of Eatonville are fighting to protect it.

The UCF Community Veterans History Project is partnering with Opera Orlando to capture veterans’ stories this holiday season.

Lori Walters, associate professor of history, and Joseph Kider, associate professor at the School of Modeling, Simulation and Training have been awarded a Digital Humanities Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for their project, MemoryScan: Humanizing Digital Twin Environments. Once fully developed, the project could allow people to go anywhere back in time through the virtually-recreated memories of others.

Kwanzaa is the weeklong celebration held to honor African heritage in the United States, and will begin on December 18.

During Wednesday’s veterans salute ceremony, UCF is presented with a purple heart flag to be hung on the flagpole at Memory Mall beneath the American flag on certain days of the year.

Of the several Veterans Month events that took place this November, one took a more personal approach to honor UCF’s veterans.

The UCF campus will be closed for operations on Wednesday and Thursday due to Tropical Storm Nicole, and Friday for Veterans Day. All public events scheduled for those days will be canceled or rescheduled.

Dr. Bob Beatty, author, public historian and double UCF alumnus sat down with Dr. Scot French, director of public history at UCF, to discuss his new book “Play All Night!: Duane Allman and the Journey to Fillmore East” Thursday, Oct. 27. The book talk consists of Beatty sharing his experiences as a student and the process of writing his book.
