UCF senior music major Adriana Nieves is the recipient of a $ 1,000.00 scholarship award from the Burnett Honors College at UCF for her HIM (Honors in the Major) Thesis proposal, which was submitted during the Fall 2013 semester. Her thesis, “Madama Butterfly: the Mythology, or How Imperialism and the Patriarchy Crushed Butterfly’s Wings,” is an interdisciplinary study of Puccini’s opera, using a variety of literary and critical theories to understand how Western attitudes toward the Orient are embedded in the libretto and supported by Puccini’s music. Ms. Nieves is a graduate of Timber Creek High School in Orlando, and she will complete her B.M. in Vocal Performance degree during the Spring 2014 semester. Her thesis is under the direction of Dr. Scott Warfield, Associate Professor of Music History at UCF.
