\u201cNevertheless, She Persisted\u201d

Her uniform is a pantsuit
\nAnd her stage is capitol hill.
\nShe stands before 83 men, 16 women
\nAnd she reads the words of Coretta Scott King.
\nShe is barred from floor discussion on a cabinet pick
\nMajority leader says:
\n\u201cShe was warned.
\nShe was given an explanation.
\nNevertheless, she persisted.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her uniform is a modest dress
\nAnd her stage is a segregated bus.
\nShe sits in the first row of black seats,
\nAnd she is told to move for a white man.
\nShe is told again and the police are called.
\n\u201cShe was warned.
\nShe was given an explanation
\nNevertheless, she persisted.\u201d <\/p>\n
Her uniform is a hijab
\nAnd her stage is Pakistan.
\nShe writes behind a computer screen
\nAnd advocates for girl\u2019s education.
\nShe was sent threats for her activism,
\nAnd on the bus home from school she was shot.
\n\u201cShe was warned.
\nShe was given an explanation.
\nNevertheless, she persisted.\u201d <\/p>\n
Her uniform is rags and dirt worn clothes,
\nAnd her stage is southern plantations.
\nShe leads mothers, fathers, and children away from slavery
\nUnder the guidance of the north star.
\nHer face is on posters in town and she is hunted with guns
\nAnd threatened of lynchings.
\n\u201cShe was warned.
\nShe was given an explanation.
\nNevertheless, she persisted.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her uniform is pretty red dress and white blazer
\nAnd her stage is 1960 Mississippi.
\nShe walks into an all white school,
\nFour federal marshals covering her.
\nParents and citizens protest to keep her from learning.
\n\u201cShe was warned.
\nShe was given an explanation.
\nNevertheless, she persisted.\u201d <\/p>\n
Her uniform is a victorian dress,
\nAnd her stage is the voting booth.
\nShe casts a ballot for president
\nIn a time where women aren\u2019t allowed to vote.
\nShe is given a fine and arrested.
\n\u201cShe was warned.
\nShe was given an explanation.
\nNevertheless, she persisted.\u201d<\/p>\n
Their uniforms range are everything: mother, teacher, doctor, politician
\nAnd their stage is the streets.
\nThey make signs and hats
\nAnd they organize rallies so their voices can be heard.
\nThey fight in the name of their neighbors, their daughters, their friends.
\nFor women they\u2019ve never met, for women who have died, and women yet to be born.
\nThey fight in the name of these words:
\n\u201cShe was warned.
\nShe was given an explanation.
\nNevertheless, she persisted.\u201d<\/p>\n
