When I volunteered several months ago to write this blog post, I planned to write about some in-progress research on climate change communication. Like I\u2019ve done so many times this year, I turned on the Broadway musical <i>Hamilton <\/i>to listen as I started writing.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/tandt-blog.cah.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2016\/05\/635947804098414743-XXX-IMG-HAMILTON-CREDIT-JOAN-1-1-QNCK5FRG-78029476.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-317 lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/tandt-blog.cah.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2016\/05\/635947804098414743-XXX-IMG-HAMILTON-CREDIT-JOAN-1-1-QNCK5FRG-78029476-300x158.jpg\" alt=\"635947804098414743-XXX-IMG-HAMILTON-CREDIT-JOAN-1-1-QNCK5FRG-78029476\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-317\" src=\"http:\/\/tandt-blog.cah.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2016\/05\/635947804098414743-XXX-IMG-HAMILTON-CREDIT-JOAN-1-1-QNCK5FRG-78029476-300x158.jpg\" alt=\"635947804098414743-XXX-IMG-HAMILTON-CREDIT-JOAN-1-1-QNCK5FRG-78029476\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>A fellow T&amp;T student introduced me to <i>Hamilton <\/i>when <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2015\/09\/21\/440925873\/first-listen-cast-recording-hamilton\">NPR made the album available<\/a> in September 2015, and I\u2019ve been listening to it \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/genius.com\/Lin-manuel-miranda-non-stop-lyrics\" target=\"_blank\">non-stop<\/a>\u201d ever since. As I finish my coursework and head into the next phase of the program, preparation for comprehensive exams, storytelling has been on my mind as the subject of one of my dedicated reading lists. It is also one of the musical\u2019s reoccurring themes; the plot and lyrics <a href=\"http:\/\/genius.com\/Lin-manuel-miranda-who-lives-who-dies-who-tells-your-story-lyrics\" target=\"_blank\">raise questions<\/a> about the multitude of minority voices that dominant historical narratives fail to record.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>But <i>Hamilton <\/i>is not just about telling history. The musical combines the language and rhythms of rap and hip-hop with the country\u2019s dominant vehicle of theatre, Broadway. Furthermore, by casting mostly actors of color, <i>Hamilton <\/i>calls attention to the white male hegemony dominating Broadway and historical narratives themselves.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/tandt-blog.cah.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2016\/05\/hero-image_HAMILTON_v2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-318 lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/tandt-blog.cah.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2016\/05\/hero-image_HAMILTON_v2-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"hero-image_HAMILTON_v2\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-318\" src=\"http:\/\/tandt-blog.cah.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2016\/05\/hero-image_HAMILTON_v2-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"hero-image_HAMILTON_v2\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Perhaps most importantly, the musical has sparked interaction with history among students, and has made efforts to be accessible to young people with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/10\/27\/theater\/students-will-get-tickets-to-hamilton-with-its-hip-hop-infused-history.html\" target=\"_blank\">discounted tickets and special student showings<\/a>. Lin Manuel-Miranda, <i>Hamilton<\/i>\u2019s writer, admits to taking liberties with some of the historical facts (such as the number of siblings his bride, Eliza Schuyler, had). However, by focusing on understanding perspectives and the experiences of characters, the show demonstrates the type of historicism we need to embrace if we are to amplify underheard voices.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><i>Hamilton <\/i>makes history emotional. It uses musical traditions of sampling and borrowing (for an example, see the Rap Genius annotations on \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/genius.com\/Lin-manuel-miranda-satisfied-lyrics\" target=\"_blank\">Satisfied<\/a>.\u201d) to rewrite textbook American history.
