Your dissertation is the centerpiece of the Ph.D.: an original piece of scholarship that advances how we understand the intersection of humanities and technology, and the project through which you establish yourself as a researcher.<\/p>\n

The format follows your questions, not the other way around. Some students write traditional research studies; others produce digital work like installations, archives, or other born-digital projects that makes its argument in a different medium. Whatever form it takes, your dissertation is developed in close collaboration with faculty and held to the same standard: an original, well-argued contribution to the field.<\/p>\n

T&T students have written dissertations on topics as varied as embroidery as an archival-activist technology<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Digital Humanities in community college libraries<\/a>, and <\/span>the use of Instagram in first-year composition<\/a>. They also use a wide variety of methods, from <\/span>critical code studies<\/a> to <\/span>digital archives<\/a> to <\/span>augmented reality language learning games<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the course of the project, you’ll define the questions that anchor your research, work through the relevant literature and theory, choose and apply appropriate methods, and learn to communicate complex ideas clearly, refining the core skills of scholarly work for whatever comes next for you academically or professionally.<\/p>\n
