Set in a near future shaped by emotionally responsive AI systems, the play uses speculative technology not just as worldbuilding, but as a framework for recognizing familiar present-day conditions: curated identities, mediated intimacy, emotional distance, and the impulse to avoid discomfort in relationships. What becomes most compelling in development is the way Offshoot blurs the boundary between performance and authenticity. That is an Irish Céilí (pronounced kaylee), a folk art in which an emcee calls out the names of dances and the crowd performs the partner work arm-in-arm, and solo moves in circles and sways. Within this framework of many Irish dances, including the titular Eight-Hand Jig, we learn the history of the O’Malley family, both in Chicago 2036, and in Dublin 1701. The play switches swiftly from movement to dialogue, and each physical number moves the plot forward as we see past and future collide. Mel O’Malley has three B-eautiful children: Brigid, Bree, and enby Brenda. Of Irish heritage, Mel is constantly straddling the worlds between the motherland and her daughters’ childhood home in the U.S. When all four family members gather for Bree’s baby shower in 2036, a heartbreaking secret is revealed. The family’s experiences parallel that of their Irish ancestors, accused of witchcraft. These O’Malley women, separated by generations, have been subject to the same pain and injustices of womanhood. This play examines the nature of women’s rights through the quirky lens of dance and the misfit O’Malley family.

Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6
Each performance will be followed by a talkback with the audience

Content Warning: This play explores complex and potentially sensitive material, including references to sexual assault, abortion, miscarriage, and violence.

    Tickets on Sale Now!

About the Playwright

MC Crosby
Playwright

MC Crosby (she/they) is a playwright, performer, choreographer, educator, and activist based in New York City. Sometimes, we begin with an existing story as source material (Millions of Cats - 2025), while other years rely on collective memory (Building a Shared Home - 2023) or improvised dialogue (Daring to Dream - 2024). This year, in order to embrace all participants’ communication styles, we began with a week of almost entirely nonverbal storytelling, inviting the ensemble to express their ideas through collage, dance, sculpture, and musical conversations.

This kind of exploration is rare in university and professional settings because it challenges us to reshape and lengthen the creation process, reframe leadership structures, and intentionally build community with collaborators outside of the theatre school. We are grateful for the foundations, community partners, festival organizers, and participants who believe in the value of this work. In addition to producing a pathway for exciting new theatre, this process builds a collective of artists willing to trust each other with personal stories and vulnerable performance.

— Sage Tokach, Director

Dramaturgy Note

One of the delightful aspects of creating a devised piece is watching the themes and content evolve organically as the group identifies which moments in the preparatory work have the greatest impact or connection for them. Early on in this process, one theme that kept rising to the surface was the idea of hiding our true selves or the learned practice of “masking.” The ways we alter, conceal, perform, or protect parts of ourselves in different situations. As we continued creating, another question began to arise: Who gets to define who we are?

Across the stories, movements, and images in this piece, characters encounter expectations imposed by families, peers, institutions, relationships, and overall society. Some embrace those expectations. Some resist them. Some have difficulty reconciling multiple versions of themselves at once. Many discover that identity is not as simple as a hidden "true self" waiting to be revealed.

Between Shadows and Lightness explores the binaries we live in: the spaces between inner and outer worlds and between individuality and belonging. It asks what happens when the stories others tell about us differ from the stories that we tell ourselves. Is authenticity the absence of masks, or is it the freedom to choose how we are seen? Can we belong without conforming? Can we rewrite the narratives handed to us?

Rather than offering answers, this piece calls for introspective reflection. As you watch, we hope you consider the roles, labels, and expectations that have influenced your life and shaped the person you are becoming.

— Brandy Eleazer*, Dramaturg

*Theatre UCF Student

Developmental Production

Raccoon Play

Playwright: SMJ | Director: Nick Bazo
On Election Night, the six young Millennials who make up the Danville, OH Lions Club eagerly await the results.
