These resources\nare available on campus for UCF students and are completely free! Many students\nthat take an interest in radio or TV production can easily design and produce\ntheir own podcast or radio show for an inexpensive price. This studio is also completely free of charge. <\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-background has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-very-dark-gray-background-color\"><strong>What equipment do I need?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside Black and Gold Studios there is an electronic audio mix board that has preset settings based on which microphones you choose to use, making it an easy tool for beginners. There is a 5-mic option which is great for group podcaster layouts with your friends, and of course, there is a mic for solo podcasters. There is also a desktop computer with Adobe Cloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-background has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-very-dark-gray-background-color\"><strong>What software do I need?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Black and Gold Studios, they have a computer desktop\nwith Adobe Audition to record. In Tech Commons 2, there is a computer lab\ncomplete with the Adobe Cloud, which includes Adobe Audition. To learn how to\nuse this software, all you need is time, patience, and YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-background has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-very-dark-gray-background-color\"><strong>What hosting platform should I use?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"about:blank\">Anchor FM<\/a> is one of the top completely free hosting services. The app gives you the ability to record, edit, and make guest calls. If you want to use a microphone, then you will need to upload your files to their website. The biggest drawback for Anchor FM is the fact you don\u2019t fully own your podcast.&nbsp; <br> <br> If you prefer to start your podcast with your own equipment and space but still want low-expense options, the following resources are relatively cheap and easily accessible to you as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-background has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-very-dark-gray-background-color\"><strong>Where can I start my podcast? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Believe it or not, you can set up your podcast in your\nroom. There are even some podcasters that record in their closets. Record in a\nplace that is quiet and comfortable; the room needs to be a place that doesn\u2019t echo\nor let sound bounce off the walls too much. The advantages of podcasting in\nyour own room would be customization, comfort, and accessibility. The\ndisadvantages are that your room might be too small for group settings, and\npeople outside your room could interrupt or be heard in the recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-background has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-very-dark-gray-background-color\"><strong>What equipment do I need? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing you\u2019ll need is a way to record your\nvoice. You can use your phone or a microphone that suits your budget and needs.\nThere are several different types of microphones that can be used. The best\nthing to do as a beginner is research: there are thousands of different mics\nand mic set-ups. You can start off cheap and slowly upgrade your equipment\nbased on your needs and the type of podcast you have. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>USB Microphones are good, cheap options for beginners. The Blue Snowball is best for solo podcasters, while the Blue Yeti can be used for both solo and group recording depending on the settings you use. However, for group settings, it is ideal that each speaker has a separate microphone. Here are a few I recommend: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-outline is-style-outline--1\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-text-color has-very-dark-gray-color has-background has-luminous-vivid-amber-background-color\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Blue-Yeti-USB-Microphone-Silver\/dp\/B002VA464S\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Blue Yeti<\/strong><\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">                                                                      <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-outline is-style-outline--2\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-text-color has-very-dark-gray-color has-background has-luminous-vivid-amber-background-color\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Blue-Snowball-Microphone-Textured-White\/dp\/B000EOPQ7E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Blue Snowball<\/strong><\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Condenser and dynamic microphones are better quality options. On the cheaper end, they can run anywhere from $30 to $100. It\u2019s worth pointing out that Amazon has a lot of bundles for these microphones that come with almost everything you need. A high-quality bundle would be the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Studio (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface and Recording. If you\u2019re having a two-podcaster setup, I would recommend purchasing another mic along with the bundle. Lastly, you\u2019ll need decent headphones to listen to and edit audio, along with a laptop or desktop computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-background has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-very-dark-gray-background-color\"><strong>What software do I need?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To edit your audio, a popular free option is a software program\ncalled Audacity. Again, to learn this software all you need is time, patience,\nand YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-background has-luminous-vivid-amber-color has-very-dark-gray-background-color\"><strong>What hosting platform should I use? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anchor FM is still a good choice; however, if you want to own your podcast, Podbean\u2019s $15-a-month option is great because it has unlimited storage\/bandwidths, which no other paid podcasting service has.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get a\ncloser look at what goes into starting your own podcast, I sat down with the\nhost of the self-made podcast, \u201cSebypodcast.\u201d Sebastian Bland, a UCF student, who\nconducts a weekly podcast discussing sports-related topics, events, and\ninterviews. Along with his podcast, he also has his own website and blog\nfeaturing the latest sports events.&nbsp; He\u2019s\nalso been able to acquire a massive following, with a total of 5,000 followers\non YouTube and 11.5K followers on Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sebastian\nstarted his \u201cSebypodcast\u201d in 2016, taking almost four years to acquire his current\npopularity and following. When asked what advice he\u2019d give to students wanting\nto start their own podcast, he says, \u201cI would say stay persistent; that\u2019s the key. Try to find your niche;\nwhen you start a podcast you must able to put the work in. There\u2019s a lot of\ntechnical things\u2014it\u2019s much more than just talking on a mic. Find out your\nlisteners\u2019 demographics and target it to your audience\u201d. His choice of place to\nrecord his podcast is currently inside WNSC in Nicholson, but he will soon be\nrecording in TATV. He started off recording in his room and states, \u201cOnce I\nmoved to the studio, my podcast started to take off. There\u2019s a control panel\nwith mics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to uploading his podcast, he chooses to use\nAnchor to distribute it on different platforms such as iTunes, Spotify, and\nGoogle. \u201cI like Anchor because it&#8217;s easy to use and simple, and you can even\nrecord on Anchor. Which is great when I\u2019m not able to go to the studio; however,\nit\u2019s much better to use your own mics.\u201d Promotion is imperative when creating a\npodcast because you need as many people as possible to tune in to make it\nsuccessful. Promotion includes posting your podcast on social media handles\nsuch as YouTube and Instagram, or creating a website or blog specifically\ntailored to your podcast. Sebastian uses YouTube for interviews with athletes\nand reporters for special segments of his podcast. \u201cTwitter can be a\nprofessional outlet or just a way to connect with listeners and sports analysts.\nI didn\u2019t know the importance of a website until my manager told me that I can\nput everything on my website, so listeners have everything you need at once.\nThere so much you can add, like listeners giving feedback; customization is\nunlimited.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those of you wanting to know if money can be earned\nfrom posting your podcast on certain platforms, the answer is absolutely!\nMonetization is an option for YouTube where you can get money from the views\nreceived by fans. Sebastian\u2019s podcast is currently monetized on YouTube, and he\nalso has sponsors such as Geico and Revamp Barbershop that aid in his podcast&#8217;s\nsuccess. \u201cWe make money off of Anchor based off how many people are listening.\nThe most I\u2019ve had was 3,000 listeners; each podcast ranges. If you really want\nto make a podcast and money, audio is the way to go. Video is going to take you\nlonger and make less money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your podcast can have different formats and can include\nas many or as little people as you want. It&#8217;s better to have multiple people\nwhen doing a podcast\u2013your audience&#8217;s attention span might be low\u2013so it\u2019s a\nrefresher to hear the voices and opinions of different people. When trying to\nrecord a podcast with people that aren\u2019t in the same room, for interviews or with\nguest speakers, Sebastian\u2019s choice is using a mixer in the studio while on the\nphone with the guest. \u201cOr we\u2019ll use Anchor, which is another feature it has. I\nprefer Anchor because I can edit right then and there.\u201d. To conclude our\ninterview, I asked him what the hardest thing was when podcasting as a student.\nHe replied, \u201cThe hardest thing is being consistent, the technical aspect,\nhaving to invest in your self-buying mics, and editing. Finding a consistent\naudio engineer is key. At first, I started editing it myself, then eventually\nwas able to pay someone.\u201d These tools and techniques have helped Sebastian\u2019s\n\u201cSebypodcast\u201d become successful while still being affordable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re having any doubts about creating your own podcast because of low finances or lack of experience, there is no need to worry. You can have a successful podcast for little to no cost whether you\u2019re creating it in your room or using school resources.
