Ask any University of Central Florida honors student what\nbeing a member of the Burnett Honors College means to them and the most common\nanswer comes as \u201copportunity.\u201d Admitted into the program either as freshmen or\ntransfer honors students, some join for the specialized classes, some for the\nsmaller community, and some for the organized seminars and speakers; however,\nall came for different and better opportunities at UCF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like any club or on-campus organization, the Burnett Honors\nCollege (BHC) at UCF provides its members with a smaller circle, a family,\nwithin the larger UCF community. However, along with giving students in the\nUniversity Honors program a place to build new friendships through freshman\nprograms like peer advising and Symposium. BHC also presents avenues for\nprofessional development in research and co-curricular activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leadership<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take a look into the Burnett Honors College main office on\nany given day and you will find two honors student advisors\u2014Mackenzie Grzesik\nand Marley Denierio\u2014sitting down with other students in the college to provide\nhelp with future decisions and directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting at UCF almost one year ago, now-sophomore Mackenzie\nGrzesik serves as one of two peer advisors in BHC. In this position, Grzesik admits\nshe has the opportunity to \u201cadvise honors students in their lives as college\nstudents,\u201d as well as provide direction on course selection, co-curricular\ninvolvement, and post-graduation plans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the fall, as an incoming freshman seeking advice herself,\nGrzesik had no idea that she would be the face of honors advising only a\nsemester later. However, after applying for summer honors orientation\nambassador, Grzesik was offered the invitation to interview for this paid\nposition, replacing Marley\u2019s graduating advising partner. The rest is history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far, Grzesik has loved the the job. Working with her\nadvising counterpart and the rest of the honors advising team, Grzesik acts in\ninformational videos, distributes relevant information to students, and assists\nwith daily office duties. However, Grzesik\u2019s favorite part of the job is\n\u201cdefinitely interacting with students, getting to know them, and attempting to\nhelp them through their college careers,\u201d serving as both a resource and a\nfriend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through her position, Grzesik has not only become more\ninvolved in the BHC community but has also gained professional work experience,\nearned income, and added an extra line to her resume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Service<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, Senior William Johnson is an active member of the\nBurnett Honors College and currently serves in two internal leadership\npositions: Honors Symposium Team Leader and Honors Congress Director of\nVolunteer Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking the symposium course as a freshman, Johnson was\nexposed to the purpose and impact of community outreach early on in his college\ncareer. Symposium combines bonding activities with lectures promoting\nuniversity involvement with the requirement of service-learning hours. While\naltering the specific means of implementation and facilitation each year, the\nsymposium course persists with the common goal of encouraging students to be\n\u201cactive members that serve to better their communities,\u201d according to Johnson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his service-learning project, Johnson taught several\nlessons at a local elementary school. After researching the local community\npoverty rate and comparing it to Orange County Public Title 1 Schools (schools primarily\ncomposed of low-income students and that receive government funding), Johnson says\nhe became \u201cexposed to some of the challenges faced in [his] new [Orlando]\ncommunity.\u201d In the lessons, Johnson said he encouraged the idea of college for\nthe elementary school students, showing them that further education is a\n\u201cpossibility they can readily achieve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Director of Volunteer Affairs, Johnson plans and\nimplements two to three service events for honors students each month, from\nuniversity-housed volunteering to local lake cleanups and invasive species\nremovals. No matter the event, Johnson believes that Honors Congress events\nbring students closer together and foster a sense of community, allowing\nparticipants to meet other honors students \u201cof different ages, majors,\ninterests, and backgrounds\u2014students\nthat they might otherwise not have met,\u201d building diversity in community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Burnett Honors College also provides opportunity avenues\nfor students outside the University Honors program. BHC serves as the home to\nHonors in the Major (HIM), an application-based program for undergraduate\nthesis work described by Associate Dean Dr. Martin Dupuis as \u201cthe oldest and\nmost prestigious undergraduate research program at UCF.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After gaining acceptance to the program, students spend two\nor more semesters developing their chosen research topics and composing\nundergraduate theses alongside faculty advisors. Following approval and\nresearch oral defense, the HIM theses then receive publication on the UCF\nlibrary website and become available to scholars worldwide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the Honors in the Major program holds much prestige, it\nopens many doors for successful undergraduate researchers. Not only do HIM students\ngraduate with distinction and worldwide publication, they depart UCF with\nessential technical and analytical skills looked highly upon by both employers\nand members of higher education. Undergraduate thesis publication demonstrates\na personal curiosity and an ability to communicate findings effectively with\nothers, both of which are attributes that are valued in the professional world\nbeyond UCF. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On top of the distinction and skills gained, many HIM\nstudents receive the opportunity to present at notable events, such as UCF\u2019s\nFounder\u2019s Day, a recognition of outstanding faculty, staff, and student\naccomplishments throughout the year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the 2019 Founder\u2019s Day Convocation held this past\nspring semester, the HIM Outstanding Thesis award was awarded to one student in\neach of the four disciplines: Social Sciences, Business, and Education; Natural\nSciences and Health Sciences; Engineering and Technology; and Arts and\nHumanities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond UCF<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Progress and opportunity do not end at graduation. Students\nof the Burnett Honors College maintain connections with peers and faculty as\nthey enter the next phases of academic and professional fields. The University\nof Central Florida\u2019s Burnett Honors College houses opportunity and is a place\nfor like-minded individuals to gather, gain leadership experience, and become\ninvolved community members both within UCF and the wider Central Florida area.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
