The sound they produce is entirely their own \u2013 a perfect convergence of eclectic talents and personalities. When the Mud Flappers were awarded \u201cband of the week\u201d in the Orlando Music News, September 2011, it was George who described how to say their name: \u201cWith melody, rhythm, and gusto! If not for the truly amazing individuals, the collective could not exist as the happenin\u2019 good time that it is.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Each person\u2019s vivacity blossoms effortlessly in their live performances and recordings. You would think they\u2019ve known each other all their lives; the chemistry of the bunch is so jovial and multi-faceted yet professional and focused. The banter among them at weekly practice is like soft sibling rivalry. Jabs, teases, and jokes intermingle with business-minded event and practice scheduling, concern for troubles, and friendly chit-chat that reveals deep camaraderie. When asked separately, each appreciates the unique, fun group dynamic and each is proud of all the group members: \u201cWe\u2019ve grown tremendously as musicians\u201d says Lauren.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cahcms.smca.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/11\/Lauren-headshot.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-195 aligncenter lazyload\" title=\"Lauren\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cahcms.smca.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/11\/Lauren-headshot-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-195 aligncenter\" title=\"Lauren\" src=\"https:\/\/cahcms.smca.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/11\/Lauren-headshot-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lauren Carder\u2019s sultry, velvety vocals lead several of her own lyrical compositions. \u201cI try to bring as much energy as possible to live shows,\u201d she says, smiling and adjusting the intricate leather guitar-strap, of a design that she worked herself. (Two beautiful hand-painted ladies and a peacock, to match the peacock feather in her costume) She says, sometimes onstage she gets into a flapper character which is \u201ca reflection\u201d of herself, because she loves performing this \u201cfun and rare and cool\u201d musical style.\u00a0 In addition to acoustic guitar, her kazoo, harmonica, and ankle-bell playing compliment her colorful beauty and sweet personality as the elements of her sprightliness.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-197 aligncenter lazyload\" title=\"George\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cahcms.smca.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/11\/George-headshot-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-197 aligncenter\" title=\"George\" src=\"https:\/\/cahcms.smca.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/11\/George-headshot-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am myself onstage,\u201d says George Blair Moore Jr. Traces of his history playing with metal bands still show in his vocal style and when he rocks a mandolin with vaudevillian flair. He enjoys the Orlando music scene for \u201copportunities of having the pleasure to work with so many great people.\u201d Behind the scenes, he also produces and constructs the upcoming album. His passion for it makes him shine as the \u201csonic architect\u201d of their recordings. Each detail is perfectly balanced, each instrument highlighted, each musician\u2019s stylistic potential fulfilled. He plays eleven instruments (\u201cI\u2019m always expanding myself as a musician\u201d) and can discuss music ad nauseam.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cahcms.smca.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/11\/Mikey-headshot.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-196 aligncenter lazyload\" title=\"Mikey\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cahcms.smca.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/11\/Mikey-headshot-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-196 aligncenter\" title=\"Mikey\" src=\"https:\/\/cahcms.smca.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/11\/Mikey-headshot-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mikey Bulko \u201cjust want[s] to play drums. But if I could sing, it would be cool.\u201d By day, he works selling drum-sets to customers, but by night he sets the background for the band\u2019s jams. His degree in e-graphics is coming in handy for designing promotional material and merchandise, including the ingenious \u201cmud-stache guy keychains\u201d available at shows. He digs Orlando\u2019s charismatic local musical vibe, which he feels is an improvement over his Michigan hometown. His summarized self-description: \u201cLunch. Because of sandwiches. It\u2019s been a good week if there\u2019s sandwiches for lunch every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cahcms.smca.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/11\/Mike-headshot.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-198 aligncenter lazyload\" title=\"Mike\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cahcms.smca.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/11\/Mike-headshot-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-198 aligncenter\" title=\"Mike\" src=\"https:\/\/cahcms.smca.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/11\/Mike-headshot-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Accordion players are unicorns of the music world \u2013 no one knows if they exist until one is sighted. This one\u2019s name is also Mike (Foreman), but he is a rare sight indeed. On a brief hiatus because he and his wife are expecting, the other Flappers wish them \u201cA big congratulations from all of us, and all of you that like babies!\u201d Apparently he also \u201cworks six days per week. Probably to prepare for how expensive babies are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cahcms.smca.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/11\/Marc-headshot.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-199 aligncenter lazyload\" title=\"Marc\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cahcms.smca.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/11\/Marc-headshot-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-199 aligncenter\" title=\"Marc\" src=\"https:\/\/cahcms.smca.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/11\/Marc-headshot-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Banjo-picking Marc Lingle wears a seven of diamonds in his hat because it is the only diamond distinguishable when flipped right-side-up from upside-down. There\u2019s an element of country influence to his playing, and he synchronizes it with his ragtime piano influences. Although he has few chances to tote a piano to performances, listen for it on their recordings. \u201cI love our modern interpretation and revitalization of old styles,\u201d he says. In character onstage to some extent, he tries to \u201clet out as much\u201d of himself as possible. The corny wise-cracks are genuine to his offstage personality.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cahcms.smca.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/11\/Sarah-headshot.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-200 aligncenter lazyload\" title=\"Sarah\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cahcms.smca.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/11\/Sarah-headshot-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-200 aligncenter\" title=\"Sarah\" src=\"https:\/\/cahcms.smca.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/11\/Sarah-headshot-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sarah Elizabeth Patrick, the other lady lovely\u00a0Mud Flapperette, is the \u201cinterior decorator\u201d responsible for structuring the harmonies and melodies of most songs. \u201cShe also writes a mean hook,\u201d George tells me. A classically-trained musician with a BS in psychology, she\u2019s a triple-threat of beauty, brains, and talent, who plays violin and ukulele, sings with pristine operatic splendor, and contributes to lyrical composition. She\u2019s radiant when she tells me how she loves the entirety of the band: \u201cI love contributing to the soundscape. I love our expressive costumes. I love the collaboration of everyone building on ideas together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cahcms.smca.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/11\/Jake-headshot.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-201 aligncenter lazyload\" title=\"Jake\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cahcms.smca.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/11\/Jake-headshot-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-201 aligncenter\" title=\"Jake\" src=\"https:\/\/cahcms.smca.ucf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2011\/11\/Jake-headshot-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When Jake Williams gets up to thump that blue stand-up bass of his, there\u2019s not much to do but tap your toe and go with his rhythm. His heavy rockabilly influence helped him develop a groovy style on an instrument he says it\u2019s \u201ceasy to beat the crap out of but hard to finesse\u201d that came to him by chance. He mixes reggae, punk, and folk styles, and the cigar in his mouth isn\u2019t just a prop \u2013 he enjoys a good hand-rolled one as regularly as possible. A motorcycle-riding sportsfan who quotes Hunter S. Thompson, but says he \u201cneeds to read more,\u201d George describes him as \u201cthe track the band\u2019s train follows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The band credits their stylist Rachelle Caplaan and videographer Michael Poley for their contributions, but really, this is an example of the whole being more than the sum of its parts. Getting to know them, they\u2019re terrific, and it was easy to go overtime talking before I was privileged to hear unreleased material that embodies their vivacious, entertaining spirit. Their album is in production and scheduled for release early next year, but until then you can see them live around town. At their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/themudflappers\" target=\"_blank\">live shows<\/a>, try to refrain from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2netibKrTZ0&amp;feature=related\" target=\"_blank\">steppin\u2019 in time<\/a>.
