It was 1987 and\u00a0a well-built,\u00a0Denver native named John \u00a0never had\u00a0trouble asking a girl out.\u00a0 He was hesitant, though, about\u00a0one young woman that caught his interest, although\u00a0he thought she was sweet and beautiful.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But she was\u00a0black.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What would his parents say? He knew\u00a0how his father felt about his children\u00a0dating African Americans. What would people say when they saw a white guy walking down the street with a black woman\u2019s hand interlocked with his? It wasn\u2019t typical or expected.\u00a0\u00a0It was highly likely he\u00a0would experience some seriously cruel criticism. Was it worth it? Was she<\/em> worth it?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

According to the Huffington Post, \u201cInterracial marriages in the U.S. have climbed to 4.8 million \u2013 a record 1 in 12\u2026 Blacks are now substantially more likely than before to marry whites.\u201d Be that as it may, only 4% of individuals attending UCF are multi-racial students, according to statistics posted in the UCF Office of Undergraduate Admissions. That means\u00a0a mere 2,400 students are multi-racial (that\u2019s fewer than the entire enrollment\u00a0at my entire high school.) Perhaps\u00a0 we can assume that based off of this statistic, even now in 2014, people are still hesitant to start relationships with those of different races than themselves. What\u2019s the hold-up? Granted, things are clearly a lot better for interracial couples now than they were in John\u2019s day, but that is not to say the issue has disappeared completely.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How different would life be if, when looking at people, we saw their heart<\/em>? That is, if we saw their inner character rather than their \u201coutward appearance?\u201d \u00a0What would we look like?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Zits wouldn\u2019t matter.\u00a0 Nobody would care about braces. And race would never cross\u00a0our minds.\u00a0Some\u00a0total babes could be utterly hideous, and some whom we consider, um, less-blessed<\/em>, in that arena, could be downright beauty kings and queens. Anyway,\u00a0it serves to show that in reality, characteristics of the heart matter far more than characteristics that are merely physical, and that includes a person\u2019s race.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Now I don\u2019t mean to force too much guilt. I actually believe that in most cases, we\u2019re just naturally more often attracted to somebody of our own race (or specifically, of our father\u2019s\/mother\u2019s race). But, it\u2019s one thing if we\u2019re just not attracted to a particular person, but \u00a0it\u2019s another if we refuse<\/em> to date that person solely based on his or her origins.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Maybe the world would be a kinder place to live in if we\u00a0considered the heart<\/em> of a\u00a0future date and not the skin that surrounds it.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What ever happened to John and the girl he wanted to ask out? \u00a0\u00a0 Well, he\u2019s been happily married to the pretty African American girl for twenty-six years.\u00a0Together they have five goofy children, some with tan skin and light features, some with fair skin and dark features, and one of whom grew up to write about how her dad discovered\u00a0true beauty and\u00a0how the color of his wife\u2019s skin\u00a0became totally insignificant.<\/p>\n
