Time to break free of routine
\nBy jumping into another routine
\nWatching too many sports on a plethora<\/p>\n
Of cable channels teams I grew up<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Watching based solely on proximity<\/p>\n
Now I root for them for life<\/p>\n
Organize schedule around games
\nWhat season is it check the sport on TV<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Football means pumpkin patch<\/p>\n
Halloween Thanksgiving<\/p>\n
Basketball spring lilacs Easter<\/p>\n
Baseball in the summertime<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Besides beachside barbecues<\/p>\n
The weekend means relatively loose
\nLike prose poetry aesthetics or anti-aesthetics<\/p>\n
Spontaneous open to discovery<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Whereas weekday grind feels more<\/p>\n
Like Poetry with a capital \u201cP\u201d
\nLike Shakespeare\u2019s sonnets<\/p>\n
On meter rhyming and on point<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
When I was young, I wanted to ride you
\nBut it was hard to find the right balance<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Settled for the smoother less hip longboard
\nMore convenient, less falling on the pavement<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Skating was born in southern California
\nLike Hollywood cinema or Burritos with French Fries<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Inside of them when we were young<\/p>\n
My friends all skated or played sports<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Free and unassuming no responsibilities<\/p>\n
Now they\u2019ve mostly traded it in for blue-collar jobs<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
And picture-perfect families to support<\/p>\n
The skateboard, however, remains an iconic<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
West coast symbol of freedom, irreverence,<\/p>\n
Expression, though it can also simultaneously<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Be found at the Olympics on mainstream commercials<\/p>\n
Selling the timeless image of youth and vigor<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Seems far from early gritty days of Venice Beach<\/p>\n
Boardwalk before bohemian Venice<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Became gentrified by millionaires, techies,<\/p>\n
Venture capitalists, not necessarily<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Complaining just observing evolution<\/p>\n
