They left without warning, no note taped<\/p>\n

to a mirror, no trace or teaser.\u00a0 No lipstick<\/p>\n

marks, sealed an envelope.\u00a0 With boarded up<\/p>\n

windows like the soul of it gone astray\u2014<\/p>\n

like a dog lost from home.<\/p>\n

At a moment\u2019s notice\u2014<\/p>\n

Pizza crust left on the counter.<\/p>\n

Dust balls on the sills. Mice eating the mattress offal.<\/p>\n

An emptiness where there was a banter of life\u2014<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u2014music, doorbells, loud hammers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A couple arguing in a new language,<\/p>\n

then making up all night. The smell of eggs cooking<\/p>\n

at dawn.\u00a0 The children groggy from sleep, awaken to finish<\/p>\n

their homework.\u00a0 Pencils tapping syllables into place.<\/p>\n

Hats hung on a hook, the fire crackling in the stove.<\/p>\n

A drawer of mittens and gloves.<\/p>\n

Winter snow boots waiting to make tracks.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Why must we practice leaving and loss?\u2014<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The tender missives on the refrigerator door\u2014<\/p>\n

Family snapshots, quotes, buttons, magnets.<\/p>\n

Simple objects that tell us where we live, who we are.<\/p>\n

Home, where we take the stones out of our shoes.<\/p>\n
