It is a hinge.<\/p>\n

It is a flash splintering<\/p>\n

the sky,<\/p>\n

then a rumble.<\/p>\n

Under ripe light,<\/p>\n

it is pollen<\/p>\n

furring the bees.<\/p>\n

It is a wood thrush\u2019s<\/p>\n

song rising<\/p>\n

from the backyard\u2019s<\/p>\n

green pulpit.<\/p>\n

Over and over<\/p>\n

one calls, insistent.<\/p>\n

Then another<\/p>\n

parses, flute-like<\/p>\n

as the head<\/p>\n

bobs. Tail flicks.<\/p>\n

It is the link<\/p>\n

embedded in us.<\/p>\n

Think of<\/p>\n

the old gospels<\/p>\n

which require<\/p>\n

a beating heart,<\/p>\n

church hands<\/p>\n

to answer.<\/p>\n

No matter what<\/p>\n

form it takes<\/p>\n

it seems impossible<\/p>\n

to disentangle.<\/p>\n

And still the God-weld<\/p>\n

split, despite my bows<\/p>\n

and prayers<\/p>\n

to save my son.<\/p>\n

You were silent.<\/p>\n

Prize judge David Keplinger’s citation:\u00a0“In this delicately achieved lyric, like the prayer it references, rife with \u201cpollen\/furring the bees,\u201d and the \u201cbackyard\u2019s\/green pulpit,\u201d the natural world is imbued with sacred qualities, though the speaker\u2019s calls to save the unnamed son are not answered. Nevertheless, the poem honors the tangled music of this realm, offering the song of the wood-thrush, \u201cflute-like,\u201d as embodiment of this grief.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
