Weapon for nothing. Recall my first diet,\n66 pounds, my proud refusal of a fist-sized milk carton.\n\nMy mother\u2019s sister at 40, spooning Gerber peaches\ninto her mouth at the family table. Recall the game\n\nmy mother taught me when I was a teenager\u2014\n\u2014<em>find someone on the street who has my body<\/em>\u2014\n\nNow without her how I will sharpen. Will be\nvapor. Smoke. Furious at the world for nothing.\n\nRushing down the year\u2019s dark corridor, street unspooling\nevery morning, tracking miles.\n\nHow I craved my mother\u2019s judgement. Be vapor. Be smoke.\nBe blade. Remember how it feels to desire\n\nnothing, not even touch\u2019s static. Remember why\nemptiness still comforts like nothing else.\n\nI will shrink myself down to where I don\u2019t matter.\nThumbelina, tight and safe in a walnut shell.\n\nYet grief thickens everything.
