They moved as one\u2014\n         muscular, thick, sequined\u2014\nso if I dipped down, I could nearly scoop \n         handfuls of their bounty up\n\nto my chest like some dream of my hunter ancestors\n          lost in the currents \nof my DNA. I imagine desire like this. \n          But whenever I stabbed \nmy hand into that glacier water, they dispersed \n          at once, every one. And this entertained me \n\nuntil the day I did catch one, held its slim, jeweled body \n          inside my fist. The thrill \nof its tail flickering inside my palm \n          like candlelight, like a snake\u2019s forked tongue\nuntil I unclenched my hand to let it go and saw\n          it was already gone.\n\n<\/pre>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Nurture<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<pre>As souls in heaven, before inhabiting their bodies, children choose \n\n           their mothers. I heard my mother say this exactly twice. \n\nOnce after we had fought in the car to cut the silent ride home. \n\n           And once on the phone with my aunt after my cousin shot himself \n\nthrough the mouth. I was born after a summer solstice \n\n           under a new moon.
